Hi everyone. Sorry this will be detailed but want to give all info. over 48 hours ago one of the chicks pipped, she/he begin the zip process, but was rolled around so much by her siblings that we believe she was positioned in a way she couldnt get out. That evening she still sat there with only her face peeking out, trying but exhusted to get out. We decieded she would be the last one to hatch so we quickly took all the others out except for 1 that wasnt dry. My dh wanted to help her, I said no ~ as much as I felt like a jerk. Next morning low and behold another had hatched was dry along with the other one in there. At this point I told him to do what ever he felt would help as this was the end of hatching now. He got her out of shell, completed sticking with membrane and egg shell pieces. I added a wet sponge and left her. After reading some posts I did the warm washcloth wrap in the bathroom with shower on and heat up in house. I did this twice during 8 hours. she still layed limp, but peeped and rolled around. Last night I decided to again bring her to bathroom, but this time dunked her body-not head in 100 degree water. Me and my husband gently was able to remove all of shell pieces and most of membrane. gave her electrolyte, and put her in incubater for night (didnt have set up for 2nd brooder). Also kept the small dish of vitamin water in there with her. I got up twice in the night and gave her electrolytes. Got her a set up in her own brooder. She wont eat even with my help even tried mashed hard boiled egg, she only drinks when I dip her beak into water. She can sit up without falling on her side, but barely moves around. She is aleart. Her left leg isnt working. She doesnt use it or appear to try to. When you hold her up her right leg extends down, but the hurt ones stays up. Is this a case where I need to splint? Any ideas on getting her to eat? She has a stuffed animal for company, and she is next to the other brooder so I'm sure she can hear them. I have held her in with the others, but at this point they would just peck away at her if I put her in with them. Tomorrow is Monday ~ back to work. We wont be able to nurse her as we have this weekend. I know its up to the chick gods if she makes it, but I want also dont want her to suffer, dont think I could cull her unless I saw clear distress, then I still dont know if I could do it. Please give me any suggestions. I would have a picture, but not sure if that would help. I dont even know what is wrong with her leg ~ just know she cant move around.

You did a very good job describing what is going on with you chick! I am sorry that I dont have any useful advice for you. I am sure someone will chime in and help you out. It sounds like you have taken very good care of her!

She may still be absorbing her yolk sac and isn't hungry or thirsty yet. I believe that they can go a couple of days without eating after birth. Her body may also be trying to recover from her hatch. I have no advice except just to keep a heat lamp on her at this point. If she's alive after you come home from work, I'd say she's got a good chance of surviving! It sounds like you've done a great job so far

ok thanks everyone...I thought maybe I went on and on too much...but I figured it would keep from questions being asked. my worry was once they started eating they needed to keep eating. Last time we got them at 3 days old so I didnt go through the hatching part. I will look up on some websites about leg injuries, and see if I can find out more about her leg and when should I start forcing her to eat...as much as you can force a chick. I just feel helpless, and not sure I can use a sick day for one of my chicks.

Thanks again for the support!

Oh my goodness - I have a chick exactly the same way - I am using vet wrap to try to get her legs up under her and I am using a little parrot spoon to spoon feed her. She is hanging on like she wants to live - who am I to decide - she is sitting here on my lap right now - I am going to keep watching this thread - please let me know if you find out anymore about what to do for them! BTW, my parrot spoon is an actual baby spoon that is bent in a little trough shape to help baby parrots eat - I used to feed all the baby parrots I raised this way - not as much danger of asperating them as with a syringe.

Miss Lydia thank you for the link. after reading the article I googled chicken hock joint and found and old post on byc that showed a picture and a way to help. We did try to pinch the joint, but it didnt do anything. I am going to start a new thread to see if anyone can give me more assitance on this. But now I know what is wrong and that is a huge help, even if in the end we need to cull, at least I know what is going on with her. Bunnibird if you put in byc's seach the following hopefully it will bring you to the thread. Couldnt figure out how to copy and paste it sorry. It this is what your chick had then look for my new thread and we can follow together. Mine is just over 48 hours old, and dont want to wait to long. I will at least try to help.
Persons user name who started the thread is draperchick, the post is from 5/9/09 the title is "Help-Look at this pic of chicks hock joint--to cull or not to cull" its under emergencies. Good luck! And again thank you to everyone for being so supportive!
