Hello,

I got 3 new chicks a week ago, 2 BOs and 1 maran. Im guessing they are about 2.5 months old? a couple days ago, one of the BOs started about sneezing once every 2 or 3 minutes, and yesterday the maran started too. we isolated them from the rest today, and the maran seems to sneeze little sneezes abot 2 or 3 times a minute, while the other one has big sneezes every 2 minutes. For the past week, they have been pecked at pretty bad by the rest of the flock, and have been sitting in the nest box, away from the others for most of the days. Help?

Also, 1 of my Jersy Giants (4 months) has half his face and eye swollen shut. (I still do not no if it is a boy or a girl...) She was fine yesterday, so I have no idea what has happened! It looks very bad though

. Any ideas or cures?
(looks like he has a swollen wattle too

and some yellow stuff by her nostril)

It sounds like they have a respiratory infection which may be viral or bacterial. My flock has the same problem but they seem to get over it. I usually isolate them when the symptoms appear and give them electrolytes and antibiotics for a few days. The pecking could have caused them stress and affected their immuno-supression, hence whatever infection they have is taking hold.

I hope that another member with more experience than me can help out, but thats my advice, for what its worth.

Good luck!

Your chickens have a respiratory disease, possibly MG or coryza. Either the new chickens brought it from their previous home, or you may have had a sick bird that was a carrier. For this reason, that is why it is best to always quarantine new birds away from your flock for at least a month to look for symptoms of illness. These diseases are chronic, and will make carriers of your flock for life. Sick birds need to be removed from the healthy ones. Many people cull sick birds to cut down on the spread. If you treat with antibiotics such as Tylan and oxytetracycline or Sulmet (for coryza) they will remain carriers. Sorry to be blunt, but they can be sickly the rest of their lives. You can get a chicken necropsied by your state vet if you want to know which disease they are carrying. Read about those and other respiratory diseases here: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ps044
