PLEASE HELP! A couple of problems with my new girls!!

How would I go about doing that? I've never heard of doing this before. Of course I've never had the need to look at leg issues in chickens...
Is there some instructions somewhere on here?? I'll look & do an internet search to see what I can find.

What did people ever do without the internet???
Go back to post # 18. I have already given you a link to see how to do a hobble.

If coccidiosis sporulates from oocysts. That means it is everywhere in the environment. If a window in your house is open a spore can get anywhere. That doesn't mean one has to raise chicks sterilized lab, it just means they need to build immunity which we assist with. During developmental stages the oocysts (eggs) naturally exist and are passed on in droppings. They sporulate the protozoan that causes all the problems. Chickens build immunity or don't. That is why we try to help them build immunity so there is less mortality rate.

Thiamine is B1. Out of all Vitamins beneficial to the growth of chicks, limiting B1 is not dangerous to developing birds despite what the hemp cloth wearing, DE/ACV fanatics claim. Proper dosage and supplementation of vitamins, electrolytes, and probiotics in between treatment with Amprolium only benefit the chicks. Amprolium limits the amount of B1 the coccidia protozoans opportunistically thrive off of, thus the bird's system isn't overwhelmed and builds immunity. Expect more deaths if you don't use Amprolium. It is that simple. If you are worried about super, amprol-resistant strains of coccidia, Amprolium doesn't work like antibiotics because it isn't one.

Okay....now you've got my attention. Seriously, do you think it can be airborne? I never thought of that!! Now that is just scary!

Sure. It is everywhere in the environment just like E.coli. No need to be fearful since immunity stops it. Just like humans, chickens have different immune systems. Some will survive longer than others. Some will respond well to medications, others may not.

I just never thought about the chances of it possibly being airborne before. Wow...tunnel vision I guess. Since I am a firm believer in using the medicated feed for babies, I don't see it in my hatched chicks. As you said though, sometimes there will always be some who need more and maybe a few, who will need a prayer in the end. As I said in an earlier post to Casportpony, with something underlying in your flock, it can and usually will become an issue due to the overwhelmed immune system they already have.

So, to take this just one more small step...are they truly building immunities while they are in the brooder, without being exposed to the ground? Would it be enough of an exposure, if this is happening, for them to survive full ground exposure, or would they still need the additional 'help' from the amprolium in the feed?

You've given me a lot to think about and I thank you for that. Going on 3 years with poultry now and I never thought of cocci this way.

Chicks are building immunity in the brooder. Their system may not be working as hard as being outside scratching through the soil, but it is working. Some people take some dirt from outside and sprinkle it in their feed while still being in the brooder. I've done it. Whether it is beneficial or not, it doesn't matter really since they will be assisted with Amprolium before and after they get outside at 5 weeks. I don't like medicated feed because of buying some bad feed in the past. I can easily control the quality and dose of medicine by using Corid in the water.
