Please help an idiot figure out how to do the bold writing!

I can not figure out how to do bold and or italics writing. I press the B type and then press B again. I also tried just pressing B and then typing. Same for italics.

Then the word link means I can write something like the word HERE and when you click on it it will take you somewhere right? I would like to write someones name and have it take me to the page where you pm them.
Any help would be GREATLY ( THAT LAST WORD WAS IN BOLD) APPRECIATED!!!!

you have to highlight what you want to be bolded.(click the mouse and drag it across the words you want )..then, why it is still highlighted..go to the symbols above the smilies. click on what you want..the B..I..or U..
