I have a five year old New Hampshirered hen that is favoring one leg. Walking slow but eating and drinking. Seems to have a hard time getting up from a resting position. She is now not laying down with the other hens instead she is standing. I have checked her out. Soaked her in warm water as she was covered on her back end...her flute was clear. Not egg bound that i can tell. We have no roosters. Her feet have nothing on them. I am at a loss and want to help her. If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate some help. I have gone through all my books and can not find anything that seems to fit. Tyia!

Does she have any swelling of her joints, redness, or green bruising on the bad leg? A sprain from injury or arthritis might be the cause. Does she still lay eggs? As flystrike can be common on soiled bottoms in fly season, check her vent often to keep it cleaned. Is she having any diarrhea or different colored droppings? Resting her leg and keeping her close to food and water, and possibly giving her some aspirin for pain might help. Dosage is 1/2 tablet of 81mg aspirin once or twice daily for 2-3 days.

Thank you! She has no swelling or bruising at all. That was my first thought as well. I am keeping an eye an eye on her vent to make sure its clear. Her dropping appear normal as well. I didn't realize i could give her aspirin.... thank you. Yesterday it was the opposite leg so maybe it is arthritis....
