sorry if theres other posts about this but i just discvered my marans hen who seemed bloated the last day or two squating down in the corner of the pen not eating or being her bossy self. when i picked hr up i saw droppings covering her back side and looked closer to find what at the time i thought was a stuck egg half way out. i brought her inside and filled the tub with a few inches of water, put on gloves and began to tray to help remove stuck feathers and excess droppings. i discovered that the entire uncracked egg is outside of her vent appearing to hve pushed out part of her intestines along with it. i believe i can feel an opening about he size on a nickel near the bottom of the egg. no vets are open now, i do however have lots of basic medical supply, saline, ess3ential oils, epsom salt tea tree, and a number of other potentially useful things.

i ned advice as to wether i should massage behin the egg, try to lubricate (i dont know the safest lubricant to use) the small opening and massage over the egg. if it worse or more dagerous if the egg breaks? anyone with experence please help me asap. i cant post pics from my phone now, but if necessary could email them. please help me...

definately a porlapsed vent. i sent the pictures finally, though i couldnt get good ones with heer struggling and all the poopy feathers. ive been calling every emergency vet around, the closest cant se her until almost 3 pm tomorrow, and im unawae how long this takes to become life threatening. i think it happened today. the only vet that an see her today is near detroit lik 2 1/2 hours away. called michigan state farm extension and they only do see animals

i'm not sure the what appeared to be the hole is anymore (theres no blood) because i just saw her poop and it came out above the egg i believe. the vet tech i spoke to said even if i apply sterile lube after a warm water soak (which im doing here in a minute) and somehow manage to work the egg out (now i'm no even sure that i possible...) that the insides need t be replaced and/or removed and stitched up, probably requiring antibiotics. $87 for the visit plus however much else for the treatment, i don't have muh money but could make it work if necessary and i'll feel horrible if i dont since she is a pet to us, not just chicken.

does anyone know a time frame as to when this becomes immediately life threatening i she is still able to poop and isnt showing signs of blood? i dont know if i should jump in the car and head south or wait for a local vet tomorrow and d what i can until then... its an unbroken egg, buts its also her first so i believe it'll happen again without vet care...

I just checked my email and the pictures aren't there yet.

Call the vet tech back and ask if you should give calcium.

An alternative to soaking is filling a bathroom full of steam and leaving her in there.

ive got her soaking in warm water in the tub in a steamy bathroom and gently massaging the exposed area with sterile lube. the egg is completely outsie her body, unbroken, but bound in her intestine. im unable to determine is the spot i feel is in fact the opening or if it is an interstinal twist and her vent hole is above the egg where we witnessed dropping seem to come from. i've read that ou can one tm try to help it all back inside of her, but im not sure thisis whise since it was relating only o prolapse, not involving an egg in the protrution.

what its down to now is do i drive 5 hours round trip tonight, or make her up a cleaned out dog crate with a clean nonfuzzy towel and beg the vet a half hour away to get m an early appointment, possibly having to until nearly 3 pm.

do you know if this is usually immediately life threatening, or is a matter of 16-18 hours not a detrimental as it may seem? i dont know how quickly hey coul die from this, or be assured of a potentially massive/fatal bacterial infection... the drive in my car is going to be another $50 i'll have to borrow, but if its to save her life i can deal with it later

i dont think i can, these are my first chickens, almost 5 months old, her firs egg, the first problem ive had... i just saw some blood on her towel though so im packing her up in the ca after i g put the others up. i do appreciate your concern but i dont think im capable of helping this along anymore so off to the vet i go... ill be sure to let you knowhow that went in the next few days. wish me and her luck
