At the moment I am thinking, silkies, silver laced wyandotte, buff orpington, pekin, polish frizzle and more light sussex. Thats all I can think of now. is there any breed you recommend?

Well, I do love those Silkies .... they are just the sweetest things. They are about my favorite, "little," chicken. My other favorites are the big guys ... I like those Sussex! Do you have Black Copper Marans there? I love those dark eggs. I like the pretty green and blue eggs from the Easter Eggers too.

Aaawwwww, I love your story! That is such a coincidence, because I have a Boots, too! AND, for the same reason as you! Mine is a Black Copper Marans girl.

The chickens are now twelve weeks old. What age are they when they usally start laying?

I think the average is around 20 weeks. I had some hatchery stock that started at 16 weeks, and I have some non-hatchery that are now 19 weeks that have not started.

My broody Silkie hatched out 1 herself! She and her sister were sitting on eggs. One day the sister got up to go eat and poo. While standing near the doorway of their little coop, a hawk came down and killed her. The remaining broody hatched one, despite having pooped all over the eggs!
