Update:
We took the rooster (thanks for the ID) back to the Half Moon Bay Feed and Fuel store where the chicks were purchased. They were very kind, and told us that the owner of the store would take the rooster to his ranch. They put Ginger in a very nice coop with clean bedding and water, so we are choosing to trust them and believe in Ginger's happy farm fate.
Our two hens are getting on well and we are awaiting eggs in the spring. One of the hens has taken to flying up onto our arm and sitting on our shoulders. And we can get sleep in the morning in our little urban dwelling.
Thanks everyone.
