I finally opened an account here. I need advise! In the last week ive lost 3 out of 6 chickens. They are ALL my daughter pets, 1 golden laced wyandotte, 1 rhode island red, and one silver laced wyandotte. The all dyed about 1 - 2 days apart. As soon as they showed any signs, i isolated them, but within a day or two they died. (The previous day, they were fine)
Ive been syringe feeding them h2o corrid(powder) mixture of 1/2 teaspoon per gallon, but its not saving them! i only have 3 left and my kids are heartbroken!
I have no idea what is happening, one day they are fine and the next 1 is deathly ill!
the poop is runny and smells pretty bad. Now im treating the entire, whats left of the flock, the corrid mixture. But im afraid tomorrow im gonna have another sick bird in the coop. No warning signs at all! No coughing, wheezing, sneazzing? they look and act fine, then the next day, its deathly ill and they die within a day or two?
i need help now!!!!!!!

terra-vet works great. My hens have CRD and they've purked up quickly

Is the correct dose on the label 1/2 cc per gallon? Sorry your chicks are so sick. Are they having any blood in the stools? Could they have gotten into any moldy feed? Try dipping their beaks into the water because syringe feeding can be dangerous since they can aspirate the liquid and get pneumonia or die. They do need to drink the liquid though to help them. Make sure their litter is dry. Let us know how the others are doing.

Good luck!

So the merck manual says: "In poultry, increased thirst, dyspnea, fluid discharge from the beak, weakness, diarrhea, and leg paralysis are some of the common signs of salt poisoning."

found this looking up salt poisoning on BYC. Don't give them softened water from the tap.
This may be of help.

Correct dosage? It is 1/2 tsp per gallon for Corid Powder. Corid liquid is 2 tsp per gallon. Are any of them drinking the water? If giving medicated water by syringe, how often are you doing this? How long have you had chickens? Any other symptoms? Check for impacted crops. Check feed, look for mold, dead mice, algae in water. Sounds like there might be something else going on besides cocci.

Yes dosage is correct @ 1/2 teaspoon for 1 gallon for the powder. They have no discharge at all, no wheezing, and show NO SIGNS of distress. Then the next day they were plumped up not moving or lying on the ground. After seperating them, they just lie there allday, with a huge pile of diaarea underneath her. Its horrible. I cant figure it out! Luckily today the other pullets in the coop look heathly, THANK GOD! But im holding my breath, i lost 3 so far this week alone and its only Tuesday! I did notice alot of stinky diarrea in the coop. Im hoping the other remaining birds are fightin it off! I have had these pullets from day old chicks, they are all about 5 months old. I never lost a single chick up until now! Im LOST!
As for putting there beaks in the water. its pointless, once they get sick, they are almost motionless, i tried this morning putting WHITEY beak(phlymouth white rock) in the water and she just left it there, and then closed her eyes. Its not looking good. My lil girl loses one more chicken, shes gonna lose it! I can only play up"i took it to the doctor and had to leave it there" 1 more time!
The coops clean, far from over crowded with now 3 CHICKENS! I can swear it had something to do with the heavy rain? Maybe just a coinicence? I have well drinking water, no softener, feed them crumble for laying and mixed in remaining chick feed. IM LOST and so close to giving up............... I cant even find help locally from a vet, ive been searching and calling all morning........

I just went through cocci in my meat birds. They are outside in a pen and they got sick right after a hard rain, the ground was soaked and didn't dry up. Cocci thrives in damp, wet conditions. I treated 5 days with the Corrid in the water and put pine shavings in the pen to help absorb some of the water (I use the shavings out of my brooder box when I clean it out, they love to scratch and peck through the shavings for the left over food) After the 5 days, I had lost 10 out of 28 chicks but the others look good. I fed them some plain yogurt to help their gut rebalance and I added vitamins to the water after the corrid treatment to replenish the B vitamins.
