Please Help Emergency

Hydrogen peroxide is the only thing to use to clean the wounds deeply, mix it with some water so it is not so harsh at first, use a syringe or bulb syringe and flush the deep areas.. It will go into the puncture areas and get the smelly infection out then use antibiotic cream. You may have to do it several times. Peroxide is a farmers helper. We have used it on all types of animals and birds, dogs and cats. It would help if you could get a hold of some penecillon at a farm store and give him a good dose of it under his skin.

Hello everybody I have semi good news, my rooster made it through the night, and I was able to finally locate a vet. I did have to do some looking but feel better. The bill was steep but wanted to give him best shot at recovering and making through this horrible ordeal. In all my sadness and preoccupation bcz I was sure they were going to reccommend putting him down I was glad they said to keep working he deserved a shot literally and figuratively! They send more home with vetemycin and an antibotic shot which I have to inject on his breast muscle. My question is should I still rinse the wound before I spray the wound of just spray the vetemycin? Also any advice on giving shots? Thanks again for the help! Greatly appreciated

Good news about the rooster. I can't speak on the vetamycin. I don't know much about it. As far as the shot goes, I think it kind of depends on the chicken. I will say all of the hens that I have had to patch up usually don't put up much of a fight. They seem to know your trying to help them. I have a big buck eye rooster with big 3+ inch spurs (actually just one...he lost one in a fight protecting his hens) when I was working on him I found that the tighter I held him and cradled him the more he would relax. He is a grumpy ol boy and can be aggressive but he calmed right down and let me roll him over on his back so I could work on him. He and I have had our differences in the past , hahaha, but I repect him for what he is. He is a **** good protector of his hens. That's why I kept him around. So I kind of rambled but just try and comfort him the best you can and I think you'll find he will cooperate. Good luck and keep us posted with pictures too!

Hi chikinperker, second day giving the antibiotic. Must admit it was pretty difficult for me to do! I inserted needle, rooster moved and needle came out. I felt discouraged. I tried again. I'm confused as the spot on the breast muscle where the shot is suppose to go was so hard for me to find. I just found a spot to the right side of the breast. Is that ok or do I need to find the muscle? Is there a guarteed sure fire way to find the breast muscle. Very confused.

The absolute best natural product for sterlizing wounds I've found is Colloidal Silver. After I put CS into the open wounds, then I begin to help speed up the healing process of the skin tissue by spraying the wound with Dr. Willards Water several times per day. I did this with a little hen that was attacked by an owl and had the skin of her back ripped off completely. Her back regrew skin within a month, feathers began after that and she's in perfect shape now. Everyone told me to put her out of her misery when they saw the gruesome pictures of her wound, but I wouldn't even consider that without giving her a chance to heal. I'm so glad I did.

Just a tip, if you smell anything bad on your hen, search her. Sometimes wounds you don't see can become infected or if it's warm where you are you'll have to worry about maggots. Those two reasons are the big two for when it comes to keeping the wounds clean. Plus, if you aren't isolating him from the other chickens you might want to watch and see if the hens are pecking the wounds. I dont know if you know but chickens love meat, any meat, they'll even eat each other so watch for that I hope he heals, good luck!

I'm having some problems with getting him to eat today. He's got loose brown stool. I've been feeding a cat food, oatmeal and a little honey. Is the loose stool normal. He's not eating his chicken food and I bought chick started which he just ignored. Any food suggestions. I have can food for dogs, can they eat that? Do the birds feel tired and want to sleep with the antibiotic injections. I guess he could be tired bcz he had a very rough day yesterday at the vet.
