I am a fairly new chicken raiser. A have a flock of 5 birds, all about a year old.

Yesterday I noticed one of the chicken's eyes was half shut and bubbly/foaming. This morning when I went down to the coop the eye was completly crusted shut. The chicken seems to ortherwise be acting normally.

I don't know if this is an injury, infection or disease. Should I seperate the chicken form the rest of the flock? Should I trest the eye in any way? I have NO IDEA what to do. PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!

Well, here is what I would do.

Separate her, in case it is a resp. disease, and to prevent the others from attacking the eye til it is healed. Clean the eye by soaking it with a normal saline soaked gauze pad or cotton ball or the like. Apply antibiotic ophthalmic ointment. Repeat 2 or 3 times a day.

You can get the ointment at the feed store if you don't have any. You can buy saline at the drug store but it is not cheap; you can make your own very simply. Boil some water to sterilize it, then add 1 tsp table salt to 1 quart water. Use non-iodized salt. Here is more detailed information on normal saline:

Hopefully it is just a minor injury.
