Please help: Eye infection--bubbles and stye on eye lid (PIC)

Stef in Davis, CA,

I got the info on using Tylan 50 as an eye wash from another members that said they had gotten the info from Peter with firststatevetsupply.com. I was also told the Tylan can be used to flush the sinus cavities. I haven't tried this though. Turmeric, the spice, can be added to food and is reported to boost the immune system.

I'm using the Tylan 50 / saline solution in a small pump spray bottle and misting the runny eyes. It is eaier for me to do on my own than trying to get drops in there and it seems less traumatic for my girls.

Their eyes are looking even better this morning. I am also injecting each with 1/2 cc Tylan 50 twice a day. I initially thought we had bronchitis or Coryza that's why I turned to antibiotics but I noticed a pox mark on Fancy's foot a couple days ago. It seems we have a mild case. I'm hoping it doesn't get worse before it gets better.

Hope your girl gets better real soon too!

I highly recommend checking out First state Vet Supply. They have really good eye (opthomalic) medications and LOTS of other meds you might not find locally. If you contact them, they can advise you also. Prices are good, shipping is prompt.

I didn't think it was fowl pox. It was just what I would do if I saw that in my own hen's eye.

I am also wondering about the "foot lesions" , was it bumblefoot or a case of scaley leg mites?

thanks

Thanks for the details on Tylan for the eyes, I think I'll check out 1st state vet supplies too.

I thought the foot lesions were bumblefoot (black scab on the foot pad bottom) but then one hen got raised, infected-looking bumps on the top of her two middle toes so I took her to the vet. The vet looked at the bottom foot pad scabs and the top toe scabs and said it looked like lesions from fowl pox virus. She wouldn't really discuss bumblefoot with me and seemed to suggest that bumble foot is just a foot infection that can be caused by a number of different diseases, not a specific disease itself. So, I guess there is nothing I can do about the pox lesions, but I did treat the worst off bird with antibiotics (Clavamox) to treat the secondary bacterial infection of the pox lesion. That is what I'm hoping to avoid with the current hen...hopefully if the eye problem is a pox lesion, then I can keep it clean to avoid a secondary bacterial infection. But it is still a guess that that's what she has!! I'm not really sure.

The eyes are crusty and the feathers are dirty but I don't see any evidence of pox. I don't see any sores on the non feathered parts of the chickens face.

Bubbly eyes means a respiratory infection. You need to get water soluble Tylan. Get it at the feed store or you can order it online at firststatevetsupply.com

Mix 1/2 teaspoon Tylan powder with 1/2 gallon water.
Make sure this is the only water they have available to drink so they have to drink it.
Make new solution everyday
Use for 7 days straight and don't stop using it even if the symptoms disappear.
