Please help Flower - mucus, limp, raspy breathing *pics*

Thanks so much annek. The only thing I'm wondering is that in the article, it mentions that the smelly discharge is a nasal discharge. Flower doesn't seem to have any nasal discharge...just mucus coming out of her mouth. I was also wondering if she could've been poisoned somehow, but all the others are fine. And my husband and I couldn't think of anything that she would have been able to get to. Their coop is built out of regular wood...not the treated stuff.

I have been reading some of the threads and this is how one person describes the smell-is this what yours smells like?

Can you tell us what the smell reminds you of ??
It's like a cross between chicken poop and pus. It mostly reminds me of a pus smell.

Here is the thread-http://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=99874&p=1

I will see if I can find anything else on the smell, I hope it isn't coryza.

Did you give her any benadryl tonight? See if it would help her, if it is coryza you can use antibiotics to help her. I can look up what type I remember baytril (I think ) was the best and the stuff they sell at TSC worked too teracycline or something like that. Only thing is if it is coryza it will spread.

Let us know how she does and if I can do anything to help. I will stay on for another 30 min. or so if you need me to do something. May just be able to give you moral support, but I'm here for you!

Hopefully it isn't. I will see if I can find anything on mucus. I had been reading about chickens getting stung by scorpions and some had roosters take multiple days to come back. Having paralysis on their legs for sometimes over a week and gradually coming back. I don't know if maybe this is a delay. Have you noticed any problems walking?

Nope...she seemed totally back to normal after a full night's sleep. The next morning she was clucking away in the box that I put her in, and happily joined the rest of the bunch. I hope it was another scorpion sting...and not some weird sickness. We don't have TSC here...but I wonder if the local feed stores carry antibiotics. I'll call them in the morning. I do have a friend who's a vet...but she's a dairy specialist. At least she'd be able to help me with the dosing, as long as I can get ahold of some. Unfortunately I won't be able to get any from her...she's in Michigan.

Every few minutes, I hear Flower trying to flop around and she'll occasionally utter a very sad cluck sound.

Did you give her benadryl tonight? Is she still having problems breathing? I am having 0 luck finding anything remotely resembling your mucus discharge. Bloody discharge, brown discharge but nothing that sounds like what you have. Local feed stores will carry antibiotics, the problems is what is it and what treatment to use. I don't know. Maybe your friend the vet would know if she could have gotten a secondary infection from the sting and if she did what kind of infection it would be.

I will try reading a few more posts for you. I wish someone who knows more would chime in!

okay, my last stab at it. If you have oxine the disinfectant you could try fogging her with it. Take a look at this link. The only reason why I am thinking it is a possibility is that it can lay dormant in their system until a stressful event happens. Also this treatment wouldn't have side effects. Anyway, I am logging off. I hope she does okay tonight and cheerfully greets you tomorrow.

poor little girl..she does look pitiful..

as NotTheMomma posted...if you can, get her into some sort of sling, or propped up in an upright position right away..(make sure the vent is clear),
very bad for them to lay like that..
could be why she's rasping..
if you can get her upright, maybe the rasping will clear.
is she able to swallow?
has she eaten?
is she able to stand or walk at all?
describe any droppings..color and consistency.

check this girl's crop..if she hasn't eaten, it should be empty..
feel for any lump or grainy feeling.

try and get some vitamins..Poly-vi-sol liquid baby vitamins, Enfamil brand, no iron..give 2-3 drops for 4-5 days..then taper off for another
2 or 4 days..also a small dab of Vitamin E from capsule.
see, if when she is upright if she will eat or drink..
she must be kept hydrated..by drops on beak.

if she will eat, maybe some baby oatmeal mixed with plain yogurt and a cooked egg yolk might help..
a teaspoon of canned beef cat food might be an option for protein.
or Kaybees baby bird feed from pet supply.

Oxine, and antibiotics are available at::

http://www.firststatevetsupply.com/store/

have to determine if the rasping and "mucus" is part of a reaction to scorpion sting, respiratory illness, or crop problem..or from laying down like that.
If you contact TSC..or go there..you'll need to look in the LIVESTOCK section..NOT the poultry section.
if respiratory, and she is this down..she'll need injection of Tylan 50..
need more info..
