Please HELP!! I don't want to loose my girls! Phoenix, Az

Hi there,

I also live in Phoenix. I had a city inspector stop by the house yesterday to tell me that I will be receiving a notice in the mail soon that I need to either get notarized signatures of all of the owners and occupants in my vicinity giving me permission to keep my chickens, or I will need to get rid of them by the 8th of November. I am going to attempt to get the notarized signatures, but it seems near impossible...Please keep us updated on what happens tomorrow

you can have a notery stop by your house then go door to door for your signatures that you need. Thing is you were likely turned in by a neighbor.is it possible to talk to them and find out exactly what the complaint was about? Are chickens illegal in your city? Was it a noise complaint? How many birds do you have and how big is your lot size?? Do you have roosters? If you can find out exactly what was bothering the neighbor bad enough to turn you in perhaps talk with them to try to fix the problem?? If a neighbor refuses to sign ask why and ask if you can fix the particular complaint. Maybe they will agree and sign. At least you have a chance here to keep your birds. I would call a notery and explain your situation and see if they wouldn't mind coming to your home to notery the signatures you need. I'm sure most folks would be happy to sign. Id give it my very best try.id also try and find out what lead the neighbor to call the authority. Was it noise or smell or crowding?? Was it roosters crowing? We're the chickens running in others yards? What do you think it was? Maybe talk to that neighbor and offer to fix what was bothering then in the first place? mean while I'd get they notery to come to the house and start working on signatures.i really hope things work out for you. Please keep us posted!! God bless.

I live in the Phoenix area. I know that some cities in the area allow chickens and some don't. As I recall, where chickens are allowed, the rule is that they are ok as long as neighbors don't complain. And roosters are not allowed period. HOAs are another matter. I had to move to horse property that has no HOA (I couldn't be happier). I support everyone with a backyard to have the right to have chickens. They are MUCH quieter than dogs. I'll support you any way I can.

The rules vary per city. Tempe allows up to five hens in all single residential zones; the AG zone has no limits, and allows roosters. If your neighbor doesn't like it, tough; it is allowed. Now they must be kept in a manner so as not to cause a nuisance, but there are no specific "chicken nuisances" Just common sense ones that are nuisances regardless of the cause. (Noise, odor, pests, health issues, etc.)

The inspector never came and called to day they had to re schedule the inspection. In that time we actually gave away 3 out of 4 birds and we just have our Ameraucana now. I put up 3 other threads of my own about her living on her own and she's having a beak issue so we really didn't want to give her away as well.. We don't know when the guy is coming to inspect bit in the meantime we're going to do what we can to keep our Ameraucana happy and healthy more importantly. Still.. The court date will be inevitable :p

Her name is Brighton. She's the sweetest quietest and friendliest bird we've had. She was always at the bottom of the pecking order and always did her activities separate from the rest. I made her a single roost so she can live in our bedrooms which she will be for the time being. Need a chicken diaper too.
