Hello, I'm hoping to get some answers to a couple of questions..
Long story short, my broody hen hatched two ducklins last Thursday. I have been putting momma and the two babies in a dog create during the night and letting them out during the day.
When I go and tuck them all to sleep, momma is on the roster and the baby ducks are just on the ground... so I guess my question is, if I were to leave the baby ducks on the ground without momma, would they die? (I would still put them in the create to make sure they are safe) but would it be to cold for them without their mom? Even though it's summer? (Picture of temp for the weekend)
I don't have a heat lamp, but I'm wondering if a real feather duster instead of the hen would work?

Really hoping I can get some guidance on how to make sure these cuties don't die on me!

I'll keep doing what I'm doing, but we are leaving this weekend until Monday and I'm scared if the person watching them won't be able to put them into the dog create at night 🥺 so I want to find alternate ways!

Thank you so much!!!

Also! Do you make sure that your ducks eat duck food and the chickens eat chicken feed if they all live together? 😶

They shouldn't, as long as where the crate is has some heat.

No, the hen can safely eat duck grower!
As long as it isn't medicated chick feed, they can also eat chick grower, Non medicated.

But never give medicated to a hen who lays eggs in which you might eat. You wouldn't want to consume the medication in the feed.

I have had multiple hens raise ducklings! It has always turned out well!

If you are worried about warmth, give them a rice bag that they can cuddle into.
Or perhaps a heat lamp!

This is an older picture, but she is currently raising two Pekins and a runner mix!
They have all moved out into the large duck enclosure!

Thank you so much for your reply! I checked this morning, and thankfully it's not medicated grower 🥰
I have noticed with the diet change she has had watery poop, I gave her buttermilk and wheat germ and that has seem to clear it up.
Thank you again! 😊
