If you felt an obstruction like skin, the egg might have gotten wrapped up or stuck inside loose skin inside. i've had it happen that one silkie hen laid her first egg but it came out all wrapped in skin. i couldn't find the opening. Rushed her to the vet and she cut the skin to get the egg out.
Egg laying really is so dangerous for a hen when things go wrong. All we can do is the best we can do at the time, and hope everything comes out okay.
Again, so very sorry for your loss. It sounds like she had a wonderful chicken life and was much loved in her time with you.
I have chickens only for a year, and during this period, I learned a lot from them. I never expected that I will bond with them that much, and also do things like these (visits to the vet, take care of them individually, even examine their interior with my finger). I will always remember her and my turkey. They were both something more than flock members.
Also I would like to thank you all here for the useful advice you gave me so far. I really appreciate this, since I learned loads from you too. I hope now that my hens that sits on the nest will give me newborns really soon.
