I have 2 hens who have been diagnosed with egg yolk peritonitis. I have taken them to the vet who luckily is very familiar with treating chickens. Emma had a very high fever (107.6) and the vet was able to drain some of the fluid out of her abdomen. Zoey's temperature was petty normal and had much less fluid in her abdomen so he didn't drain any. Emma was given some subcutanious fluids to help with the fever and was given a shot of antibiotic (baytril) and both of them were sent home with baytril, Zoey 2.4 ml and Emma 5.9 ml. Unfortunately today when I checked their temperatures Emma was at 107.4 and Zoey 103.8 and I can still feel a pretty significant amount of fluid in their abdomens (I think Zoey may actually have more since her vet appointment). I called the vet and he prescribed another antibiotic (metronidazole, Emma .56 ml. and zoey .5 ml.) He told me to still give them the baytril as well. He also prescribed some iron supplements and told me to try and give them some pedialyte. I have them both inside and they are resting but are still very sick. I'm hoping they will come around but I also wonder if there is anything else I can do. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Egg peritonitis is just awful. I would also like to add that my chickens are pets and not food and I don't care if they ever lay an egg again I just want them to live a happy life. also, they are both sex links (ISA Brown and black star).

You've been to the vet, it sounds like he is trying his best to help get the girls well. I would trust him. As for the Baytril.... trust the vet., here is some new info. (last link below) on it... no worries.

And, have you thought about, considered some Oxine -- here are some links for it's uses (do not, NOT use activator with it, just Oxine alone, diluted in water... 1/8 (one-eighth) tsp. per gallon of water -- into a (mister) spray bottle -- spray a fine mist over their heads, a few sprays - 2 or 3 - three times a day, for them to breathe in.... can also be put into a cool mist vaporizer and used three times a day for a few minutes or so). Oxine kills viruses, fungi (funguses), molds... can be used to disinfect the coop as well as used to treat disease in the chicken via inhalation.

This (link below) has some information about Baytril. New findings are showing it is much less toxic than previously thought. Here, it has only a five day withdrawal time for eggs and slaughter.... and, it does not do any damage to the liver, kidneys, lungs, etc...

So.. I'm going to assume (guess), even though it is not specifically mentioned here, that it probably does not leave them sterile as well -- based on this report, study.

It is the recommended treatment for CRD -- the most effective. This is two veterinary schools doing the study and recommending the Baytril (Enrofloxacin) for treating chickens and turkeys.

You have to decide for yourself. You might ask at the / your local feed store as well... someone there usually knows about products and treatments. You might print this out and take it with you.

I also hope the vet showed you how to give the girls the pedialyte orally, if they won't drink? I'm sorry they are sick, I do hope they recovery. Best of luck.

Thanks very much I really appreciate any input! I did give some wrong information though on the baytril dosing though. Emma is on 2.8 cc & Zoey is on 2.4, my bad. also the doctor called me back with the cytology report from the fluid he took out of Emma and it was consistent with egg yolk peritonitis and no fungus was found. They were up and walking around in their box this morning which makes me very hopeful but I can't say they are out of the woods. I am worried that this is going a chronic issue. My vet did mention that spaying a chicken was possible but pretty radical. any thoughts?
