I have 2 hens who have been diagnosed with egg yolk peritonitis. I have taken them to the vet who luckily is very familiar with treating chickens. Emma had a very high fever (107.6) and the vet was able to drain some of the fluid out of her abdomen. Zoey's temperature was petty normal and had much less fluid in her abdomen so he didn't drain any. Emma was given some subcutanious fluids to help with the fever and was given a shot of antibiotic (baytril) and both of them were sent home with baytril, Zoey 2.4 ml and Emma 5.9 ml. Unfortunately today when I checked their temperatures Emma was at 107.4 and Zoey 103.8 and I can still feel a pretty significant amount of fluid in their abdomens (I think Zoey may actually have more since her vet appointment). I called the vet and he prescribed another antibiotic (metronidazole, Emma .56 ml. and zoey .5 ml.) He told me to still give them the baytril as well. He also prescribed some iron supplements and told me to try and give them some pedialyte. I have them both inside and they are resting but are still very sick. I'm hoping they will come around but I also wonder if there is anything else I can do. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Egg peritonitis is just awful. I would also like to add that my chickens are pets and not food and I don't care if they ever lay an egg again I just want them to live a happy life. also, they are both sex links (ISA Brown and black star).
