That's what the thread was about... Getting advice.

Anyway....
Update. So I assisted in the hatch, it went sour and the chick have a tard leg and couldn't stand. I had to hand feed and water this lil back yard chick many many times. I called the rescue farm to see if they could help. The woman said there is nothing she can do, she's tried before. Best thing to do is do him in. I took my time made leg braces and he is happy as a pig in poo. Still staggers but he's sitting up on his own, staying up by himself and
Even eating and drinking. I have no delusions, I know he's not outta the clear by far, But he made it a week and showed tremendous progress. if by some chance he keeps holding on, i guess I'll make him a house pet.

Many times with assisting, there are reasons like this that cause them to not be able to hatch, which is why some people are against assisting. (survival of the fittest?)
If its simple splay leg, it can usually be corrected (although I have one now that I suspect is never going to learn to walk). But then we have slipped tendons which are very rarely "fixable".

Congrats on what you have done! I hope it works out. Post a pic of the fella if you get a chance.

Here's a site with a bunch of info on leg issues. It may help you and your little one.

She's an OEGB. Mixed color, I believe, I got her when she was a few months old. The chicks are silver duckwing.

She looks just like my black breasted red OE hens.....

Just ask yourself if you were chicken?would you want where leg brace your whole life?be a house chicken?not be able to scratch around yard looking for bugs?
Animals don't fear death. They aren't instinctual, they are born programmed with traits ,instincts and abilities to do certain things. When they can't do those things they don't have ability change thought process and understand they can't do it.Being a house chicken may make you feel good but how does that make chicken feel?

Thanks guys. I must disagree with the (survival of the fittest) when it comes to domestication and civilization. I mean, do you really think your dog would have made it? Or you and me for that matter. I'm not so sure. But the chick is up walking with no braces at all now. Still has a lil limp but is fine. In the brooder with the others, happy. Runs to my hand. Don't think there will be a need for her to stay inside.

I applaud your effort and commitment to saving this chick.I hope he or she make full recovery.I hope you didnt take my earlier comment the wrong way.I was giving my opinion on quality of life with regards to animals. Is it fair to keep a cat or dog that cant walk or run alive locked in house or chicken that cant interact with flock, scratch and forage for bugs. All animals have instincts engrained into there thought process. When they are not able to act on these instincts they are robbed of everyday satisfaction or fullfilment. The animal doesnt understand why it cant do these things or you are keeping them in house for there own safety.I feel in some cases people keep animals alive for there own personal satisfaction not animals best interest.Im not refering to you or your chick.
