I dont know why everyone jumps to assisting with hatch so soon.Mother nature knows more than anyone here does. When chicks are ready to hatch they will.Ive never heard of mother hen putting coconut oil on her eggs to help them hatch.
I don't think the OP put the oil on the eggs to hatch, only on the dried out membrane unless I read it wrong.

I stood above this momma hen, just observing, I did not intervene. Pips exposed, etc. They all hatched just fine.

Beautiful pictures, thank you for sharing. I am getting ready to put eggs under 2 broodys in my flock. They each have their own broody boxes, hope I get to watch as they start to hatch. Have done this before, but never watched!! Will try to watch this time for sure!

We are "simulating" the incubation process.... Not perfectly replicating it. So if my incubation method isn't as perfect as a mother hen, then I'll do what it takes to help. If the chick was not "meant" to hatch, I'll take care of that too.

And I have seen hens help chicks hatch, as well as other chicks helping their hatchmates. I actually have pictures, if I can find them.
He said its day 21 .There is no reason to start assisting with hatching on day 21.

This girl was in a box by herself too, and it was a hot, humid day. It's definitely amazing to see. She's the best momma I have. And i have about 8 broodies going right now, plus 3 incubators. :lau

If a pip is done out side the air pocket, and no progress has been made in 24hrs after pip which occurs after day 21. Your kinda an idiot for not trying. The chick is stuck and will suffocate/ starve after say 48-72hours after detracted from membrane. At that point your not trying to "save something" as much as give it a chance at life. I'd love to say this is my opinion. Unfortunately this is science, and that's a fact.

No worries, try putting the chick in the cup. It needs to be a small cup with quite narrow sides if possible. Does the leg look broken or is it just not holding the chicks weight?
More paralyzed than broke. I see nor feel a fracture or dislocation. And its unresponsive to touch. No self motion past the...ankle? Don't no chicken anatomy lol

Was that a welsummer?

She's an OEGB. Mixed color, I believe, I got her when she was a few months old. The chicks are silver duckwing.
