i'm so sorry you and your birds have to go through all this. i definitely agree that it's some kind of predator. weasel, coon or possum, they are masters of getting to their prey. weasels will actually kill porcupines by biting their faces but all of these animals can get a hand or snout through chicken wire.

chickens don't make a fuss when attacked partly because it could draw the attention of more predators. my parents lost many chickens to predators when they were younger and they never heard a peep out of the poor things as they were dragged off in the night.

what in the world is that ???????

I would put a light in there for them so at least they have a chance to see what it is! And get hardware cloth over those windows , or plywood for now. OMG, I thought it was bad having my bird carried off by a hawk while still screaming, or the one whose leg was chewed off while still alive, and the ones killed by dogs, and latest the two killed by a black vulture. But chewing off the face, well , that's just horrible!!! I am so sorry you are going through this, and the poor chickens have to live with it!

We keep a very dim night light out in the coop for the girls so they can see if they need to. Maybe something like that would help so they are able to see just a little if needed? I hope everything goes well for you today! Sending you lots of support!!

How horrible - those poor babies. I agree it must be some kind of predator. I kind of doubt it's a rat. I know they can get into some of my pens, but they never bother the adult chickens. They will attack and chew on/kill babies though. I'm thinking weasel, possum or coon. So very sorry:(

Looks like a weasels work to me. They can get through very small openings just like a rat, but much more dangerous.
