Wow! This post really bit into people, didn't it? I have two pretty good mousers (cats), and have never had issues with rats, so I can't say I've been in your shoes. But I do feel more like Chooniecat...I hate to see any creature have to suffer. I'm not against killing something, but hate to hear about it being done in a torturous way... just my opinion.

To all you die hard creature lovers. I don't care about rats or anything that is most disgusting to me. Rats are decease carriers. To you and every other creature that roams this earth. So please stop posting here about your humane side. Remember what the Lord said. "Before you can take a splinter from your brothers eye you must remove the log from yours." And he did not say Thou shall not kill rats. The post I place wasn't meant for opinions of whether it is right or wrong. So if you what to post your own subject on how to save this retched creatures that is your choice. So please don't post it here. I don't need to read your opinions. I need feedback on how to kill these filthy things.

Here's the rules of this forum... in case you didn't see them before you posted. They are stickied and one of the top posts in P&P

*Although some ways are not considered ideal to some, it serves the purpose of removing the offending predator. If you have an idea or a helpful comment, please do reply. If it is a sarcastic comment about the disposal or capture of a predator, please keep your thoughts to yourself. We are not here to judge one another on methods or ways and means.

*That being said, please do not gloat or suggest torturous ways of killing for pleasure or indeed, post in such a way that your predator control can be construed as pleasure killing instead of simply taking care of a problem.

*Compassion will go a long way toward helping to educate and help solve someone's predator problem. No matter the reason, most members' birds are their pets and being a chicken doesn't make it less of a pet than a house cat or companion dog. Please don't lecture or hassle anyone about their losses. Glass houses......

Making sure that all food sources are removed/secured is a good start, add a few outdoor cats will help too.

Funny how the bleeding hearts dont want to kills rats but have no problem eating the embryos of a chicken.

The remark is fine by me. And thanks for you help. But if I get a cat won't he attack my chickens when there are out free ranging?
Please advise.

the point IS(and it was a suggestion for helping) diligent correct use of properly set up rat snap traps DOES work. we had rats and as far as quoting biblical pieces MY Lord would expect compassion and kindness in ending a "vermins" life. as with serial killers, etc. I have NO need to see them suffer and would just end it. good luck.

After several reports, I think it is best to close this discussion.

For everyone please review the rules of posting in the P&P section of BYC. Which inclueds not to either glorify the killing of anything or post for effect, and not to protest the killing either.

To the OP you need to be sure the bait is very secure no matter what you use. If they can carry it away they save it, hording is their highest insinct. Those hordes are most often eaten by other critters and you have no control of where they take it. For a free and easy bait station stop by any constructions site and ask the plumbers working for sewer pipe scraps about 1 to 2 feet long, and get some wire scraps from the electrician 3 to 4 feet at most. Put the bait on the wire in the middle, put the wire through the pipe so the bait is in the middle, tie or secure the wire by bending over at each end of the pipe and leave the stations out in areas as needed. I have mine out 24/7 and the chickens can't get the bait, my cats and dogs are safe, and the mouse and rat population is controled.

For mice 4 inch pipe works, for rats better to get the 6 inch and then be sure to go for 2 foot long so the chicken can't reach in for the bait.
