Please help me Help my little guy!

Im not an educator or very smart for that matter but I still think that hair or whatever it was you soaked off that toe was the culprit . That and the fact it looked to have bumble a couple weeks ago.

Ok so you thunk no mites too....obviously I don’t expect anyone to tell me exactly what’s going on- I just need recommendations! So just keep treating him like I am? You see the skin that looks like I can peel it off?? Poor little man :(

I do. the soaks are removing the dead skin. I think if it was mine I would replace the Vaseline for antibiotic ointment . Your not supposed to use the kind that has pain reliever in it. just regular triple antibiotic.

When I see baby chick feet, I melt, but when I see baby chick feet ravaged with sores, my heart hurts.

Leg mites and fowl pox are both so rare in baby chicks, we can't be certain either is what's affecting this little man's feet, although I'm still inclined to think it's leg mites.

I would continue the treatment - daily soaks, dry, spray with Vetericyn, dry, and then the castor oil.

Sometimes, the treatment will either confirm our guesses about the diagnosis when it's successful, or it will rule out the diagnosis when it is not successful and the condition does not improve. If it's the latter, I would then lean toward some sort of genetic problem or immune system disorder.

I have t seen anyone ask this... are his feet completely dry when you do the oil or ointment? Dryin them with the dryer they will still be damp for a while. When are you applyin that stuff? Right after drying or waitin a few hours after to do it? It could be that his feet are not truly dry before you put goo on them makin a barrier so they are not gettin dry. Have you tried takin out the shavings to see if that helps? Maybe he is allergic to them? Sand might work and it wont hurt the chicks.

The only reason I was leaning towards it not being mites is you don't see the raised scaled on him that mites usually cause. The places on his feet with the sores look awful, but the rest of his feet look good - the scales are still laying nice and tight to his legs. Plus, he's only six weeks old and has never been outside or in contact with any other birds, so it would be a mystery how he contracted them.

And, it sounds like none of the other chicks have any signs of them, which is odd because all living in a brooder together you would expect them to have spread to the other chicks, too.

So, no harm in continuing to treat him for them, but it may be better to try some other things as well. I know you said you have him on pine shavings, which is usually fine for chickens, but maybe he has a sensitivity or an allergy (that's why I asked originally what kind of bedding you were using). Maybe you should try using aspen bedding or towels or paper towels for awhile and see what happens.
