Please help me sex my Barred Rock chick..

I'm agreeing with everyone else and saying this is a pullet for sure! The black wash down the front of the legs, the more black feathers than white, and her comb is still yellow. She's pretty!!!

I agree that you have a girl there! I have 24 BR, 3 of which are roo's. They are now 14 weeks old. The boys are alot lighter than the girls, and by 4 weeks there was a big difference in their coloring, size, and the boys combs were bigger, and redder. I have a pullet like your Precious, but her name is Bruny(short for Brunhilda) and she likes to jump on my foot when I'm sitting down and roost on it lol She will even run up to me when I go into the run and start crooning at me till I give up the treats..

You mean barred Cochins, right?

Rocks and Cochins are different breeds. You can sex BRs at hatch with 90% accuracy. Even if someone doesn't know how, the males get red combs early on and then it's pretty easy. BR girls don't get red combs until they are "teenagers".

Speckledhen was refering to MIgourdgirl's post about the barred rock cochins. Yes operator16 your girl is a barred rock. Speckled hen was corrected MIgourdgirl becuase she said she had Barred Rock Cochins, which is incorrect, there are Barred Rocks and Barred Cochins, same color, just different breeds. I had a friend that called her Barred Cochins ( Barred Rock Cochins) as well and I had to correct her on that too. And yes like she also said, most barred chicks can be easily sexed as dayolds with a little eye training.

Oops. You're right. I've had regular BR's and the barred cochins, so it's easy to crossover when describing. Thanks for the correction. Also added a barred buff cochin to the mix from some hatching eggs. This one turned out to be a roo. I'm curious when he gets bigger, if I cross him with a buff cochin, if I'll still get the barring. It will be a good experiment to try.

Thanks Cynthia. The barred buffs are really neat when they have all they're pretty barring. Wish I could have gotten more from the hatch. One guy and one gal would have been great, but we take what we get and are thankful!

If you're interested in the barred buff cochins, I can pm you a couple of BYCF names of people who have listed them recently or in the past. I ordered mine through someone on ebay, and she recently listed an auction for 8+ barred buff cochin hatching eggs--I can give you her info too if you're interested. I didn't have a good hatch rate, but there are so many factors that contribute to this as you may know if you've ever gotten hatching eggs before. I'm considering trying another go round of hatching eggs in hopes of getting some hens. I have a cochin setting on a golf ball--I'd love to give her something that will actually hatch.

I love my barred cochins, but these barred buffs are quite pretty. You should google a pic of the barred buff cochins on this forum and you'll see how truly pretty they are when they have all their feathers.
