Hello again, my wife and I purchased 4 baby chicks to add to our flock of 6 hens. As usual I am here to peck the brains of y'all to see if we can sex or specify breed any of my 4 new babies. We bought the first one's March 18th, one was labeled as a black sexlink and the other a New Hampshire Red. Then on March 25th we purchased two more, one was labeled a Giant Cochin and the other was listed as a buff brahma. My wife loves those two chicks fuzzy feet. Im suspect of the Giant Cochin to be a possible roo, and Im suspect as to whether the Buff Brahma is really a Buff. Well here are some pics, thanks everyone.

This is Penny, sold to us as a New Hampshire Red

Here is Star, sold to us as a Black Sexlink

Here is Amy Farah Fowler, sold to us as a Giant Cochin. This is the one I was suspect to be a roo. It grows so quickly, its just as big as the ones that are a week older than it.

And last but not least my favorite, little Aria, sold to us as a buff Brahma. Im curious about her, she grows so slowly compared to the others.

Lol! Love the Big Bang names. How is a buff different from a cochin? They look the same to me. I'm just learning breeds..lol.

Your first 2 look like Buff orpingtons, I would agree with the black sexlink. Amy and Aria I'm not sure on but doesn't look like a buff. Buff is a color, like the first 2 chicks in your pictures.

Color you will really have to wait for, as it will be much easier to tell at 4-6 weeks once all the feathers have come in (or at least most, on pullets). As for breed, I'm guessing the first is a production red, second appears to be sex-link; the "cochin" appears to be coming in penciled, which leads me to believe that is a (female) dark bramha, while the last chick is probably your cochin (straight comb)... however, not buff. Not even buff columbian, by the looks of it. Another penciled or perhaps barred coloration.

Considering that you have four different breeds you should not be comparing between them to determine gender. Bramha are known to be slow developing overall and are much heavier than all of the others, while I believe cochins develop more quickly like the layer breeds (but neither are layers; don't expect to feed your family courtesy of those two).

I don't see anything at this point indicative of cockerels, but the pictures are also not very good. Comb pictures in natural lighting may help at this age, but don't rule anyone out until you have better pictures in a couple of weeks.

All look like pullets to me except Aria, who I'd bet money is a boy.

I agree with Blaze Jester that Sarah looks like a dark Brahma more than anything else, and that Aria is certainly a color other than buff. Cute chicks and nice names!

Oh I hope not, Aria is my favorite. She is so small, sweet and loves to perch on your hand or shoulder. If Aria turns out to be a roo, maybe it will be a sweet one. I will post more pics in a few weeks
