I am sorry you're going through this with your hen. I'm sorry I don't know how to get a link to a thread, but the3ofus+oursixchicks had a situation like this a couple months ago. I think if you search for her you can find that thread. As a matter of fact, she just posted a picture of Rosey (the hen with the prolapse)under her Christmas tree. Rosey's doing fine.

Hope each day brings improvement!

i have been through the EXACT some thing. the key is keeping them in the dark maybe not total darkness. my rosey did that with her first egg. the vet cut it out and said she would probably do it again. i kept her inside for a while and like you i did not want to have to confine her. she is a pet and i felt sorry for her but, i took her outside for just a few min. and she went almost straight to the coop and laid another and it happened the same way. the same vet told me i would have to put her to sleep or have the egg cut again. i was so close to putting her to sleep i knoew she could keep having eggs cut out every day. i took her to another vet and he said NO i dont want you to put her to sleep. he cut the egg out put in what he called a purse string to keep her from prolapse. i had to keep her in darkness for almost all day. that cut the egg process downbecause with the purse string she couldnt lay. so we made her a card board box mansion in my bathroom. i would go in and visit and sit hug and love with her for a few minutes different times during the day. then she would have to go back in the dark. i HATED it so bad for her. she was only allowed 4 to 6 hrs of light a day. i tried to keep it around 4 then i gradually moved up and then put her out. with alot of tears and prayers she is doing wonderful and is laying eggs. please keep her light time low hours. i havent read all the post i just jumped in here. when i first posted my problem on here i dont think people really understood what i meant by the egg is out but its still in so they were thinking (i think) they were thinking it was a regular prolapse but it wasnt. cant wait to read the rest

also i would NOT break an egg inside of the chicken. i have read where that is a no no thing to do because if you leave some inside it could be very bad for the hen. this is also what i did about food. i got some kind of grain stuff from the feed store ( she didnt care for it).i didnt want to give her any protein cause i heard that made them lay. i brought her in bugs, grass she got saltine crackers and the chick starter i had oh yeah and ramen noodles she LOVES them so she got those too. i didnt feed her eggs yogurt or anything like that. she doesnt like yogurt ( my girls are kinda picky spoiled i guess thats alright though

. i cant wait to read the up date hang in there when it looks the worst it maybe be getting better. she also had dried poo on her bottom. its hard to describe but it was like it was stuck in her skin i could hardly get it off matter of fact i got very LITTLE of it off. i tried to put her in warm water that really didnt do much but get her wet she didnt care for it. but she loved getting blow dried. but after a few days the poop started coming off sometimes we need to let it come off it self. cause when i messed with it, it wanted to bleed i was afraid i would mess her purse string up. cant wiat til morning

this is just me because i have been through it. she needs to heal more before she is exposed to alot of light. i mean the vet told me only 4 to 6 hrs a day and that was supposed to be for over a month up til nov. when the days started getting shorter.

Hi,
Thank you all for your advice and support. Josefina is puffed up ( does not feel well type stance) but, still alive. She was in the kennel for most of the day ( in darkness) yesterday ..then I let her out about 12:00 noon so she got time with the other chickens and a little exercise. It gets dark at 4:30 so she had about 4 1/2 hours of light yesterday. She roosted with them last night. I have a red heat lamp in the coop ... is that going to count as "light"? I sure hope not.. It did nothing for the laying of my other hens so cross my fingers.. She roosted up high and walked around yesterday. Drank some but, did not eat..That seemed fine but, she is recovering from major surgery and I can tell she does not feel well. I am giving her vitamin/antibiotic's in her water and eye dropper it to her to make sure she is drinking it. I gave her an egg yesterday but, she did not eat it. From what I can tell she is not eating... much... I am giving her bread today but, she is in the dark right now so I cannot tell if she has eaten it at all. Lucky for us it is Mid December and the light is only about 8 hours a day and not increasing til later this month. Her bum is all tucked in nicely ( nothing red showing) .. but, her feathers have honey on them so they are a little stuck together. She really hated being inside the house. She is outside in a dog kennel under a big blanket for darkness. Hopefully she will eat something today. I will keep you updated. Thanks for the prayers.

Hi,
Josefina is not doing much better. She is hardly eating or drinking. I give her droppers full of water ... and she ate some bread yesterday. I fear she is loosing ground. I note her bum is sticky from the honey and white. I wanted to take her inside and give her a bath today. I was hoping that I could put TeeTree oil in the bath to help aid in any infection? any advice there... ? I did not stitch her up. I have a thing about needles ( I know I know... not Knifes but .. needles).. and I also was fearful of leaving the stitches in.. Stitching it wrong... mostly I cannot deal with needles... So I read that someone just put honey on the wound and put it back inside and the bird was fine... perhaps overly optimistic on my part . I don't want her to suffer anymore. I just don't know if what I should do. Perhaps I could give her a couple more days? is that mean? A bath? warm oatmeal? She is not interested in any food right now... thanks guys...

Do not use tea tree oil. It is highly toxic if ingested in even the most minute quantities.

Sorry she is not doing better.
