I had a girl, she constantly gave me soft shell eggs.
I noticed she looked like a bowling ball, with 2 little legs holding her up.
She was a special girl. I thought it was EYP, so I brought her to the vet.
What it really was, she had cancer, and her liver and kidneys couldn't process her fluid waste.
Her body, instead of expelling them, just held onto the waste, and she blew up like a balloon.
The vet drained her abdomen every week, for about 2 months, until she just gave out.
I had another hen, same problem, but not special.
I drained her myself a few times, but she was too far gone.
She popped like a balloon when I tried to autopsy her, and a nasty urine looking fluid gushed out.
If you want to try it, take a coarse needle syringe, and punch a hole just into the skin, no further, into her abdomen.
Kind of like where her thigh rubs her belly.
If this is the cause, her abdomen will be bloated, and this will give her some relief.
Chickens are very prone to cancers, unfortunately, since they are chickens, there is no research or cure.
Warning.... I am not telling you how to do it, just telling you what I have been through.
I will probably get yelled at from somebody, but the chioce is yours.
Good luck with her.
Roberta
The wheezing is probably the pressure on her lungs, from the fluid buildup.
I let my little girl (the special one) sleep in the house, her last few days, she slept next to me on her own towel.
She died in my arms.
It is difficult when you love them.
If you want to be sure, my vet did an ultrasound of her belly.
Depends on how much money you want to waste on a chicken.
I'm sorry.
ok..i am going to start crying! i love my chix. since i got the new ones this past spring - i am not as attached to the older 8, but i am still pretty attached.
they are all my pets. i am out there at least 7x a day (and i have 3 young kids...so i am busy!) but i do love my chickens.
thanks for all the advise.
just noticed it today, so i am anxious how she will be in the morning.
I agree with the bath first.
I didn't mean to upset you, just warn you how it went with my girl.
That was a worst case story, hopefully, it won't be that bad with yours.
Do the bath, and go in with the lubed finger, and see what happens.
And don't wait a few days, since they can hide illness well, if you have noticed it's this bad, it probably is bad.
you did not uspset me (thanks for your concern) just upset my chix is not well.
i did a bath and just held her for a bit. she is sleeping straight up on her roost.
i checked for an egg, nothing there. hoping i got something stirred up and it will help.
will just keep checking on her!
thanks for all the advise.
