1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.) 1 year old Easter Egger- smallest of the flock.
2) What is the behavior, exactly. Yesterday when I went to lock the girls in the coop, she was struggling to lay an egg in the nesting box. She was squawking a bit but eventually got out and ate and drank like normal. I brought her in the house last night just to be on the safe side. I put her back out with the flock today and she has been eating and drinking walking about the yard, etc. Still no egg. The are above her vent feels "swollen" though I cannot feel an egg shaped mass. She does not like me feeling the area.
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? 24 Hours
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms? No
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. No
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. N/A
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. Yes
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. Normal
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? BOSS, normal diet-- warm water soak and ky
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? Whatever needs to be done. I love her!
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use Pine shavings.

Please help!

Just an update for anyone interested. Even though no one offered advice, I figure maybe someone else can learn from our experience. I took Maxine to the vet this afternoon. Just as we were getting ready to leave for our appointment, she layed and egg. The area still seemed very swollen. So, off to the vet we went. The vet did x-rays and there are no more obvious eggs. It appears she may have a hernia. She is staying over night to have a barium enema and blood work, then potential surgery. Here are her x-rays. I just want her to get better!

Wow, thanks for sharing... I actually tried to reply earlier, but BYC crashed, so I forgot about you, sorry. FWIW, I was going to say that it looked like she has ascites and that you should do a cloacal exam to check for an egg or other masses. Again, thanks for sharing and I hope she gets better.

Good for you for taking the time to get this much help for your Maxine!! :) I would do the same. i am fairly new to the chicken world and appreciate your reply. It can help people like me in the future. I'm also sorry that no one was able to help you.

Thank you, Kathy. No problem. I just spoke to the vet and they are waiting for the last few x-ray fils to process, but she is pretty certain it is a hernia. She said the last few x-rays will confirm it and she will let me know for sure. They did xray and ultrasound and said there was not any ascites-- just bowel.

Thanks!
