I used hardware cloth, heavy-duty, and lined it under the run and 1 ft around the outside and 2 ft up on the chicken wiring for extra protection... we've only just gotten a few rats and a squirrel so I really hope they go away I know it's crazy but go to your local or your hair salon or pet care place and ask them for hair. It's kept everything away since we've had my chickens hope this helps and ill be praying for ur problem GOOD LUCK!!! ALSO, pee smell like a dogs pee even urs if it helps lol its cray but my chickens are fine ( ish)

We have fencing 2' on the ground outside the pen to keep them from digging. But, they climbed up the 4x4's and ate the netting and I lost a few chickens last summer. But, I now have carpet tack strips on top of my 2x4 pen boundary, on the 4x4's in the ground, and we'll see how we do this year! It was a cheap fix. I hope!

Nice idea about the carpet tacks. I was thinking of using this around the edges of my raised gardens to discourage slugs . If it doesn’t work there I can try it on top of the open run.
