Hello
I’m new to ducks, and I am desperate for help. This will be my second attempt at seeking advice and help for my ducklings on this forum. We have tried everything and I’m still seeing little progress. About 4 weeks ago my 2 ducklings started running a fever, breathing hard, sneezing, wheezing, and one had a pretty strong sweaty sock smell. I was able to find a vet who diagnosed them with a respiratory infection put them on SMZ. They progressively got better until day 7-8 of their antibiotic round. Then started to get worse again. Wheezing and panting came back now with increased lethargy, diarrhea (we are thinking this is due to antibiotics), drooling, etc. I called the vet back and he changed their antibiotics to Baytril and said if they didn’t get better in 3-4 days there was nothing else he could do. He told me that I wouldn’t want to spend more money on 5 dollar ducks. The ducks again seemed to get better after day 4 of Baytril but the improvement was short lived. I took the ducks to another vet to get a second opinion. That vet put the ducks on SMZ and Baytril together. She added in an amoxicillin IM injection 3 days later when they showed mild improvement. Each time my ducklings start a new antibiotic round they show some improvement and then start to go back downhill again. We are now approaching about 3-4 weeks of treatment and I am desperately trying to save these little guys. They have fought so hard to survive as long as they have. There were several times I didn’t think they would survive through the night. -but they have. My kids (and I) love these little ducklings so much. Please, any advice or help would be appreciated.

Their appetites have always been strong. They are now 5-6 weeks old. Eating 16% crumbles. I give them 2-3 warm baths a day for deep water and sinus washing, daily offerings of meal worms, fresh veggies, grit, and are alternating one day with probiotics, electrolytes, and vitamins (sav-a-chick) and one day with just plain water. The vet suggested that we try bringing them into the steamy bathroom to try and open up their lungs, which we have been doing once or twice a day.

Any other info on feed? A lot of people I’ve seen don’t have niacin in the ducks diet but with upper respiratory issues, I don’t know 😔 I had a duck that had upper respiratory infection and he was on antibiotics and got better so I have no idea 😔

I do sprinkle brewer’s yeast On top of their crumble. Although I have to admit it’s only every few days. The dirty sock smell scared me a little about the yeast in their diet. How much should they have? Feed supply at the TS was running low, they are on DuMor organic16% layer crumble

Another thing you can give them is B-complex from Tractor supply. It's got a lot of niacin and other vitamins in it that are very good for them. I ml a day for each duck put over some treats like mealworms of tomatoes. You want to make sure they get all of it.

I feed my ducks Purina duck pellets. They have everything a duck needs from hatch through life. I also put a few tablespoons of Nutritional yeast on top of their food when I refill it.

I'm wondering what you are using for bedding in your brooder? Are you using cedar shavings by any chance?

Currently I’m using pine shavings because it seems to keep them a little cleaner and dryer. I’ve gone back and forth between straw and pine chips because I was worried about possible mold or other things in straw. The pine seems easier for quality control.

Thank you! I will look for duck pellets. And will definitely use the mealworm and tomato trick.

I know that cedar shavings are bad for respiratory infections in ducks but you're not using them so that's not what's causing this. How about putting down puppy pads over the pine shavings? It makes clean up really easy and since you've only got 2 it might make the brooder stay drier and more comfortable too.
