Please help (think he has an infection)

A little roo we rescued from our neighbors about 2 months ago is sick. He has a big lump on the side of his neck and has been sleeping constantly not moving much. He also has been itching it a tun. We would like to check it out but since he was abused before he doesn't want people near him. He is so sweet but not trusting. And we don't want to stress him by picking him up and messing with him ya know what I'm saying? We think it's an infection but not sure. Please tell me what y'all think cause he's getting worse by the hour. Thank you.

It would be good to see a picture of the lump. Where does he sleep? If he roosts at night, I would use a red light, such as on a headlamp, and without frightening him, pick him up to examine him and get a picture of the lump. It would be helpful to have someone take a picture while you hold him. Is he moving his neck in a normal way? Can you describe the lump’s appearance? Without seeing it, it could be a tumor, injury, or an abscess.

Okay I will try it. Thank you! He keep turning his neck to the side the lump is on. I couldn't get a great look at it but it looks like his normal skin just a big lump of it and it's making his feathers stick out a little cause the lump is pushing then up.

Here's some pictures. It looks worse then I thought. From the top of his head down to his chest is black and crusty some parts are red or yellow. I'm thinking it's an infected mabey burst abscess but I'm not sure.

Could he have been injured by a dog or a rooster? It could be a scabbed over injury. I would start cleaning it with Hibiclens (chlorhexidene) and water, rinse it off, and apply some plain Neosporin ointment twice a day. Betadine povidone iodine 10% could be substituted for the Hibiclens. Either of those is available at Walmart in the first aid aisle. If the scab is too hard, you can soften it with a warm wet wash cloth and a small dab of Dawn.
