Thanks for everyone's help. We just order 10 Black Australorp and 5 Speckled Sussex pullets. Ship date is set for March 7th for the day-old chicks. Hope we made a good choice.

EE's austrolorps and orpingtons would be good for your situation. they're all large, docile and quite hardy; small children can't easily hurt or annoy them and you'll get a good number of large colorful eggs.
