I have 11 free range chickens, (for eggs) nothing has changed in their day to day. Then I find my black chicken can t see. It looks awful. Now my white chickens face is starting to do the same thing. Do I cull them before it spreads to the others? Please help! I don't want them to suffer.

Good afternoon,

It is hard to diagnose the hens with limited data. The lesions could be caused by picking but I'd bring them over to the veterinary diagnosis lab. You can download the submission form. They will euthanize the birds and figure out their pathology.

I would agree that it looks like Fowl Pox, a virus spread by mosquitos.... assume you live in a climate where mosquitos thrive. They normally recover after a few weeks but you need to keep an eye on them that lesions don't develop in the mouth (wet pox) which can be more serious/fatal.
As a virus, there is no particular treatment but supporting the immune system with a vitamin supplement and probiotics may help them to fight it off quicker.

Hi, I'm so sorry for your troubles.

I do see what looks like a nasty case of pox blisters, but it also looks like there's also a secondary issue going on, some other infection.

As a precaution, I warn people about mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG). Especially in swollen eyes.

Unfortunately the only way to know for sure what you are dealing with, and to determine or confirm MG, is through testing.

But I would DEFINITELY separate the birds from your main flock and watch them very closely.

If it is also MG, it IS highly contagious. Birds that survive MG are carriers for life with low fertility, laying, and hatch rates.

I would look into it and at pics of it online. If you think that is whatnis going on in addition to fowl pox, I would consider culling.
