I've got a hen who's had a very sudden drop in activity. She is falling asleep standing up very frequently, not coming over for treats and her comb is not as strong as it usually is. I've brought her inside and offered water and scrambled egg. What else should I do? Does anyone know what could be causing this? It has been hot here the past few days so she's been inside a couple of them, I'm not sure if that's got something to do with it. I'm sure something wrong but i don't know what any input would be appreciated

Do you see her eating and drinking? I think she might be dehydrated or she is egg bound.

Electrolyte solution in addition to a separate plain water source is usually a good basic supportive care step. If she's not drinking on her own you can slowly drip one drop of water or electrolyte solution at a time onto the line where her upper beak meets the lower beak until she refuses by shaking her head.

Is she laying eggs? If yes, when was the last time she laid? Any odd "penguin" stance?

What do her droppings look like? Any bumps, lumps, or sores anywhere? How's her breathing? How long ago did you notice the drop in activity? Any other chickens showing any symptoms?

Do you have photos of her and her poop?

I agree, I'd work on hydration. If she's not laid an egg and should have, giving her Calcium would be a good idea.

I'd also check her over for lice/mites and see that her crop is emptying overnight.

Thanks everyone, I've been helping her drink but feel its likely a blocked or infected crop situation so we've headed to the vet, she's not showing any external signs of injury and none of the other hens have had any change in behaviour. Thank you, I really appreciate the responses

I'm glad you'll be able to see the Vet, let us know how she is.

She does have a blocked crop the vets weren't sure what else they could do but surgery (they also made it quite clear that they're not quite sure what to do with chickens) she's given some antibiotics if it is sour crop so hoping that helps is there anything else anyone would recommend doing alongside the medicine? I've felt the crop myself and it does feel full but not hard yet, so I'm not sure, I've had chickens for years and never encountered this 😢

Giving a chicken crop surgery is honestly pretty easy. I had a chicken that had a blocked crop and I watched some yt videos and almost did it myself. But she got better. I think the vets would be able to give her the surgery. You can also try giving her coconut oil or getting her a chicken bra. Although I am not very sure what a chicken bra does.

A blocked crop or gizzard?

Generally when a crop has turned sour, it's due to yeast or it's fungal (think fermented feed, grass, etc.). Most of the time an anti-fungal is given instead of an antibiotic which could make a fungal/yeast infection worse.

Follow the instructions your Vet gave you, but I'd also do some reading/research to determine what may be the best course of treatment for Sour Crop. The way I treat is outlined in the article below.

Crop surgery is the last course of action to take if the crop is blocked with fibrous material that will not pass any other way, then it does have to be removed. IF it comes to crop surgery, then finding an Avian Vet that is well versed about Birds (poultry if possible) is a good idea.
