Please Help!!!

My year old peacock has hurt his right inner toe really bad. It looks like raw meat. He's limping and holding it up and isn't as active as usual. I feed him by hand so think I can grab him but holding on may be a challenge. I know I'll have to be prepared to get his feet but then how do I treat it? Please give me any advice you can.

There is a current thread about a neighbor's rooster that got run over by a lawnmower and his foot got severly damaged. The lady that is caring for him has done an outstanding job! Search for "foot injuries" that may help. Althought I can't remember what to tell you to do exactly, I would think that common sense prevails. Catch him, clean the wound, apply antibiotic ontiment and wrap it to keep it clean.

Thanks Kimberly, I'll do the search. It's the end of his toe. Not sure how to bandage it and keep the bandage on but guess I can figure it out. Would be different if it was a dog that would be still and not a wild animal. I can feed him from my hand but haven't handled him since he was a chick. He free ranges. I can pen him with his sister and brother after I doctor it.

Poor rooster. Wonderful woman to take the time to save it.

Clean it up, apply neosporine to it and then bandage it with vetwrap.

I found out there is sprayable neosporine so will get some tomorrow. I can easily spray that on it without catching him. If I wrap it in vetwrap, how often would I need to change it? If there is enough neosporine on it the vetwrap won't dry/stick to the raw wound, will it? I can walk him into a good size pen with food. I'd need to let his sister and brother stay in there too or they'd all stress. Looks like I have a job ahead of me tomorrow. Thanks so much for the replies and help.

Vet wrap stays pretty clean and does not stick to wounds, so you should be pretty good. If you get him penned, throw a towel or blanket over him and them grab him up, that way he stays calmer.... get a friend to help if you can.

Can I get vetwrap at the grocery store? It's the end of his toe....maybe the toenail is gone. In order to keep the wrap on should I wrap it up to the ankle and around trying to do it not to thick so he won't peck and try to pull it all off?

It's been insane so far this morning. Saw a hen off her nest with one little chick way out in the front yard...nest is off in the back. When it saw me on the porch she and the chick came to the house. The other hen with 2 chicks and her started fighting with each other. I think the new mom is confused about what chick is hers. Got them seperated and went to the nest. Took the 3 eggs remaining and put them in the bator. It was pretty cool here this morning and the eggs were cold. Usually the hen will stay at the nest until they all hatch. Maybe these aren't fertile and she knows it. I may candle tonight but probably best to let them remain in the warm incubator....they will either hatch or not. I'm totally overwhelmed with peafowl and peachicks. Heeeeeeeeeelp!!!!

As soon as I settle down and do a few other pea chores I'm headed for HEB to get neosporine and vetwrap.

If you think it may just be his toenail is pulled out etc... you can dip his toe in iodine/beadine etc and then just keep him confined on shavings to help it stay clean for a week or so and let it heal......

blukote, spray will help too. It will seal up the wound and prevent infection too. If you can catch him on the roost at night, you can walk up behind him and just spray it, a lot of the times they will not even move off the roost. Just wait til it's good and dark. But that's what I use along with iodine for injuries.
If it's just the nail, should be a quick and easy heal up.

Thank you for the suggestions. I'm trying to figure out where I could enclose him keeping the foot out of the dirt. I've managed to spray it good with an antiseptic while giving him treats on the porch a few times a day. A lot of misses but eventually I get it saturated. He's limping less but think in his travels around the 5 acres every day he aggravates it. It's looking like my birds are going to need their own medicine cabinet.

I so appreciate all your help. My husband has no interest in the peas at all so it's really nice to have good folks at my finger tips to help and chat with.
