One of my chicks hatched today and he was all hyper and active but I turn away for an hour and now he's on his side barely tweeting! Should I take him out and put him in his heated cage and try to feed and water him?

just a minute. :)
when the chicks are born, they may be hyper, usually they just want to br warm, and sleeping. I would put him in his heated cage, about 90-95 degrees. before their born, they gain the ni=utrients of the yoke sack, which can feed them up to 3 days. so give him his heat source, let him sleep. dry off, and fluff up good luck!!! hope i responded in time!!

Thanks so much! I should have replied to my post but I think he was sleepin and I woke him up so now he's bak to normal :D

1 more question, should the hottest point under the heat lamp by 97 degrees? Or can it be warmer in the middle and 97 degrees farther out?

97 directly under the heat lamp is fine as long as the chicks have a some space to get away a bit if they are too warm. They will regulate themselves as long as they can space themselves where they need to be.

yes, Kernal Cluck is right. they just came out of the egg, so there use to a 97-100 degree environment. 97 is fine, just as he stated, just make sure they can move away from it if they get hot. happy hatching!!
