Hello, we have 2 chickens. We had a few more in the beginning but they didn't make it so we are left with two beautiful hens. They're approx. 11 weeks old. They had been living in our garage in a coop until we recently finished their outdoor coop. It's about 20ftx10ftx6ft tall. We got them used to it by putting them in there more and more each day and about 3 days ago, they started sleeping in there too. It's a very large enclosure with a coop inside so they're double protected if a predator were to somehow get into the larger coop. They seemed to be doing great. They love being outdoors and having freedom. They have been inseparable and constantly follow each other around. Well, this morning I noticed that one of them seems to be quite fluffed up and isn't running away like she usually does when I go in to change their water. When I gave them their feed, she ate like normal, but seems to be lighter like she's lost some weight. She is also drinking alright. We have them on Scratch and Peck Feed and they get plenty of fresh water. What do you think is going on? Do I need to separate them? Could this be because they're outside all of the time now? We live in a suburb about an hour outside of Los Angeles so it's not particularly cold out. I'm so worried. Thanks for your advice.

Check her for any other signs of illness. Listen closely to her breathing making sure you don't hear a wheeze. Watch for coughing or mucus. Check her crop and make sure it's functioning properly. Also check her poo color and consistency and let us know what you find after checking these things. Also make sure the others are not bullying her away from the food. Also watch for signs of coccidosis. Cocci CAN be present without having bloody stool. Signs would be lethergic and sleepy and puffed up. If you notice these signs please post. Cocci can be treated with Corid, amprollium, or amprol.its all the same medication. We would need a bit more information on her symptoms to pinpoint a illness so if you can check these things I mentioned and post your findings it will be very helpful.

Thank you so much. I am going to check all of the things mentioned. Should I send my husband to get the medication anyways? To use as a precaution, or will that cause more harm? Do they sell it at any feed store or does it need to be special ordered?

I can't get outside right now as I'm nursing my baby but I called out local feed store and they claim that they don't carry Corid. Is it possible they just don't know they carry it? She sounded like she's never heard of it. :/

Many feedstores do not carry it, but Tractor Supply does and you'll find it in the cattle section. Here is what some amprolium products look like:
