I had four Pekin ducks and my neighbors Rottweiler got out of his cage about five days ago and killed the "leader" and left one injured really bad with a broke wing and bad bite wounds that still bleed. Before they would follow me and would come up to me and they had their own routine about things and now that this has happened they are out of whack. They honestly do not know what to do. When I bring food out I have to force them to eat and the two seem to kind of distance themselves from the one that is hurt. He tries to keep up with them but takes about five breaks just from walking across the yard. I want to help them and get them back on track of when I bring the food they run to me and eat, when they see me they follow me, and I want them to run together again because I'm afraid the injured one will end up getting depressed and dying. Should I let them be? Is there anything I can do? Do I need to buy more ducks? Help please!!

you can wash out the injured ones wounds and can try and splint his wing since it is broken

their schedule will be out of whack for a bit but it will get better just give them time

I would say no, do not buy more ducks now.

I think you should get your injured duck to a vet if you can. If you can't, then I think I would bring that one inside to stay awhile. That one will need lots of support to recover from the attack and it might be a lengthy recovery. I'd say Epsom Salt soak baths, 4x per day if it's not too stressful on it, higher protein feed to aid in cell repair and healing, and vitamins in the water at a minimum. I would not want the injured duck over exerting trying to keep up and yes the other two will naturally avoid it if it is injured. Normally if a duck even displays any illness or injury at all, that means it is really quite serious. The other thing, if you have flies, you absolutely do not want flies getting in those wounds. So inside in a dog crate or such.

Can you please post pics for @amiga@speceider@miss lydia and all the other smart knowledgeable folks here to see? I wish your duck healing soon.

I took that one to the vet and he game me antibiotics to put in his drinking water and he said the others could drink it and it won't hurt them. He's so pitiful though it breaks my heart and he's fighting and trying so hard. It's like he can't figure out what has happened to him and it's ripping my heart out. I'm just torn on what to do because like I said the one that dominated them all and also the one that they would follow is dead and they are not the same at all. Any advice on what I could do on that part because I'm really afraid they are gonna die because when I lay their food out now they don't come running they just don't know what to do and I have to force them to start eating.

Just what HollyDuckFarmer said, the injured duck needs to be inside, away from flies. The wounds need to be rinsed daily with saline solution or Vetericyn spray or similar. Storey's Guide recommends clipping the feathers away from the edge of the wound so you can see what you are dealing with, and apply medication more easily.

At this point, I would be considering an oral or injectable antibiotic - not starting yet, but start thinking about it if any signs of systemic infection show up, including lethargy, loss of appetite, off-odor, anything like that.

Get the best food you can for the duck - add vitamins to the water twice a week (poultry vitamins are not expensive, at least not around here - maybe 4 dollars for a packet that lasts a long long time).

If you can get a vet's help that is best, especially with a broken wing.

Photo's will help.

Thank you all for replying it does give me a little bit of hope. I tried separating him and he freaked out when I took him to the vet he was still a little in shock cause it had just happened so he was pretty calm then but when I tried to baby him he just wanted to be with the others and I was afraid maybe that would stress him out even more? :(

I have a dog lot that I use to keep my boxer in. Would it be okay if I just put all three on them in there so he's not alone and he also doesn't have to struggle to move around much?

Also when I took him to the vet he looked him over and looked at his wing. And said where he was a land animal he's in luck but he will have to heal on his own. I will try to get pictures and post.

Going to take everyone's advice and do as much as I can. Thanks everyone hopefully it helps. I may keep yah updated just to have someone to talk to. I know they are just ducks as some people tell me but there my lil peepers and I hate to see them suffer. Thanks again
