How are you getting on?
Our hen Betty got through the night. Next day we saw a deeper wound so took her to the vets. She is stable so far after pain killers and antibiotics and may need an operation on her leg and back on Monday. I can see it will be expensive to save Betty - a £5 ex-battery hen. But when you have animals you also have a duty of care...she will be worth every penny when we get her home.
Apparently one of the biggest killers following an animal attack is egg peritonitis, caused by the eggs being broken as they are shaken in the ovary. This can take 48hours to show.
I think we did the right thing in terms of disinfecting the wound and leaving her over night in the kitchen. She did a weak shelled egg, a good sign that it wasn't broken. We let the other hens see her in the morning so that they knew she was still around. Re-introducing her will be our next battle, but we will deal with that when she gets home.
