Hi - just read your post.

One of my chickens was attacked just over an hour ago and I have been searching for help.

It seems the best thing to do is wash the wound in lukewarm water with antiseptic, then add turmeric to the nearby areas to keep away flies and discourage pecking by other birds.

Mine also has a badly damaged leg and she cant stand. I will keep her in a cardboard box in the kitchen tonight with access to food and water and see how she goes. If she is with us tomorrow I will let a vet look at her leg.

Thanks for the advice.I cleaned out the wound and put a bandage on it.I'll keep her inside tonight.
I hope your chicken is okay.Hopefully they'll both make it through the night.

How are you getting on?

Our hen Betty got through the night. Next day we saw a deeper wound so took her to the vets. She is stable so far after pain killers and antibiotics and may need an operation on her leg and back on Monday. I can see it will be expensive to save Betty - a £5 ex-battery hen. But when you have animals you also have a duty of care...she will be worth every penny when we get her home.

Apparently one of the biggest killers following an animal attack is egg peritonitis, caused by the eggs being broken as they are shaken in the ovary. This can take 48hours to show.

I think we did the right thing in terms of disinfecting the wound and leaving her over night in the kitchen. She did a weak shelled egg, a good sign that it wasn't broken. We let the other hens see her in the morning so that they knew she was still around. Re-introducing her will be our next battle, but we will deal with that when she gets home.

She is getting on well.Today she walked outside for the first time since her attack. She hasn't started laying yet so egg peritonitis isn't affecting her.The vet gave me some ointments, creams and painkillers to give her for the next 2 weeks and then I'll bring her back for a check up.
