Please...my pet chicken is eggbound...time is of the essence

oh no... She is doing Okay... she's just very lethargic.. I am starting to doubt she will make it.. I mean she doesn't seem really sick, but there is definitely something wrong, I gave her fish oil and calcium.. I am thinking maybe they were lacking calcium in their diets I give them more oyster shells now... How is your hen? are you going to get the hysterectomy? Either way, I wish you luck, I also think my hen has been that way since around Wednesday.. however she was pooping pieces of like.. egg.. so It may not be egg bound? maybe it's internal layer.. I am still new to this...

Oh my goodness--I am new to this forum. I was practically in tears as I continued to read this thread. Such caring people - and Lusty -I cannot imagine how horrable it must have been at the end-- yes I can. I have 25 mixed chickens ( gong on my 3rd year) and love every one of them.. Each one is very special to me and a short while ago I lost my very 1st hen--the one who got me started. She hatched our first baby chicks and I was hooked. Her name was cocoa cause her body was a cocoa color with a white head like whipped cream and topped with her red comb --it was like a cherry sitting on top. cocoa slowly slipped away from me one dayat a time about 3 weeks ago. She suddendly started getting weak - drooped tail -- I also carried her into coop[ as you did with your little sweetie at night ,cause she was so weak at the end she would lay by the door not able to step into the coop. Her comb lost it colour and almost turned a pale purple at the end. I tried everything to help her--but finally prayed she would go on her own cause I couldn't put her down either. Such a brutal way to end the life of a sweetpet. i Knew I was losing her -- I placed in a protected area with fresh straw--gave her her favorite treats but then she stopped drinking. At about 3a.m. one morning I went out into the hen house to check on her. She was almost gone-but opened her eyes to look lovingly ( I like to think ) at me for the last time. I cradled her in my arms and softly thanked her for starting me on such a wonderful hobby- whispering how much I would miss her -and what a wonderful little bird she was -----offering to be a mama to my first born chicks --so devoted - so loyal .but so fiesty . she passed about 10 mintues later. I am glad I had a chance to say goodbye. I know many people would think we are crazy to feel this way about chickens--but truthfully in many ways a lot of our birds are as personable as dogs or kittys. Take care Lusty. Just think of all the chickens in these horrable poutlry farms. You gave your sweet bird such a wonderful life while here . I comfort myself thinking that also. Your chicken was very lucky to live with you.

Opps -- I just noticed how old the thread from Lusty was. Oh well. I am the new kid still trying to figure things out!!

i'm sorry about your hen. It's so hard losing them, isn't it? It almost seems to me like we lose the sweetest ones first. And over the years, i've been surprised to learn of all the different chicken illnesses and diseases. i guess we can just do our best to give them a good chicken life while they're here.

Anyhow, there are so many touching, heartwarming, and interesting stories on this board, even if they are a bit dated. Welcome again!

My 19 week old Buff just started laying, her first egg was on the poop board and soft shelled.( however it may not have been hers!) Later that day her butt was VERY red and distended so I checked her out and it was an egg that wasn't coming out. I was able to remove it, and it was small, hard shelled and perfectly formed. I had to detach it from her however....she was very uncomfortable. After I eased it out of her by loosening the membranes/lining whatever! that it was adhered to, I then gave her a warm bath and she seemed to be better. she seems fine this morning. Has anyone had experience with this?? She is my first one to lay. Will subsequent eggs come out ok? help!
