@lusty
...soooo sorry your beloved bird lost her battle but know that in her already weakened state , putting her down was the very best thing you could have done for her (((hugs)))

@suebee:
I don't know how long my 2nd hen will survive. She stays on the "sleep shelf" in the coop. I give her fresh water and food every day, and antibiotics every other day mixed with treats.

I do not see how giving antibiotics everyother day would possibly help her? (what kind and why did you decide to do this in the first place?)
How is she eating and drinking? If as I suspect she is doing little of either then I think the best thing to get her to get up her strength is to tempt her to eat and drink.....there is a little tip for this which often works: get a slice (or half of a small one) of watermelon and scoop out na indentation and use that as a "bowl" (the color red will encourage her to peck at it and the watermelon is basically fluid which will help against dehydration if she drinks too little) and put her feed in there and add a dollop of live culture yogurt on top too...set her water next to it. You say she is "up" on the sleeping shelf but perhaps it might be better if you put her in a nestbox or dog carrier with the watermelon bowl and water right next to her and put this closer to the ground so she does not lose her balance if she needs to get up and out.
You mentioned "treats" ...what are you giving for treats?
three drops of Polyvisol Enfamil in the beak once a day for a week then taper off the next would also be helpful.

Suebee, I hope you can figure out what this is and catch it with your hen that's sick now.

I'll be crossing my fingers for you!

Lusty, so do you think this was her problem all along? Do you think she's had a maggot infestation all this time and it took a while before their numbers got so large? I can't even imagine what a terrible sight that must have been for you. Poor thing. Maggots are one thing I CAN'T STAND! Absolutely hate them! DH has to throw the trash bags away because there's maggots in the cans sometimes and I can't risk seeing them!

If you need someone to talk to, feel free to write me!! I was really hoping she would get better!

Sending lots of hugs from NC!

unicorn, she is eating and drinking great. I mixed a tiny bit of terrimycin powder with water-soaked bread or cooked egg every other day. The water and food are next to her on the shelf. Yes, I may get her down, if she wants to get back up there then she will.

Thanks for everyone's support. Hurricane Hanna coming my way so I may not be able to get on internet for the next few days if we lose power.

Lusty, I read your other post so I knew about the ether. :aww

Some peaple dont understand the pet thing, they dont know the bond, I have not gone through this with chickens, but when my other birds got eggbound, i would crush up egg shells tiny to a crush and feed it to them like gravel, it work for them. :|

Oh my gosh Suebee....Stay safe and I'll be thinking of you and your family (human and otherwise). Make sure you come on after it passes to let us all know you are okay.

I know that there were no maggots on my hen as of last weekend. They would have shown up in her wonderful tubs she liked so much. Yesterday was the first time I had seen flies after her and I check her several times in a day. I mean I did....

I don't know what she had. The eggbound thing couldn't have been...she would not have survived the 6 weeks. The "internal layer" thing....well same thing....6 weeks??? I had gotten rid of the chicken lice infestation and she had 2 cycles of antibiotics. I will never know. I had hoped that I could have held it together a little better...enough to have opened her up to examine what was going on inside....I guess I'll never be a vet!!! Too much of a marshmallow I'm afraid. The maggots were just too much for me. I had to try to remain calm....re-reading my original post yesterday....I don't think I pulled that off very well either! But it is a new day today...and my remaining hens are sunning themselves on my deck...waiting for me to come out. My next project...how do I toilet train them so they won't poop on my deck!

Onwards and upwards....

Lusty - You went through such a stressful emotional ordeal, now is the time to rest and recuperate yourself. i know it's hard to quiet your mind - it wants to keep going over things, looking for answers. Sometimes there just aren't any answers. i only say this as i've been through a similar experience with a pet, my cat. It was one horrifying symptom after another, three months of suffering, and even after spending thousands on medical treatment, there was no diagnosis, and i had to put her down. i felt like i had been through a war, and lost. But there was relief, too . . . relief that i didn't have to fight anymore.

Anyhow, hope you can take a nice sunshine bath with your chicken friends and let some of your stress slide away. Those chickens really know how to enjoy life, don't they?

Suebee - Please stay safe and let us know how things are going. We're all pulling for you.

Hey all, We got through the hurricane (tropical storm Hanna) without a scratch.

My hen is still with us and wants to stay up on the sleep shelf. Eating and drinking normally.

She is losing feathers like crazy!!! How could she be sick and moulting too? I mean, is she losing feathers because she's sick? Or is she just into a heavy moult and not sick at all.
I just don't get this.
