Welcome Back Suebee...nice to hear you're all okay.

Does your hen have any sign of chicken lice, or any other kind of icky creature that could cause her feathers to fall out?

Lusty,
Just wanted to tell you how sorry I am. I think you are so very brave and wonderful for all you did for your little one.
I cannot imagine your horror when you saw all the worms coming from her.
I can only pray thatyou never have to deal with anything like this again.
So sorry for your loss.

Thanks Lusty, air, goat, zoo. We prepared for the hurricane for 2 days, bought a new generator, had candles, flashlights, etc.
The storm was a bust! Winds were less than 25 miles an hour. Oh well, better safe than sorry is my motto!

No, she doesn't have any mites or lice...none of my birds do.
She still has the greenish poo and now is losing her feathers like crazy. I remember another hen going into a HARD moult last year and she didn't want to do much.

I want to give her a bath to get the poo off her vent but don't want to stress her. There aren't any flies around her so that's good.

Guess I need to research if chickens go into heavy moult as a result of illness. Ugghhh...I'm stumped.

Thank you Jess....very kind words....and no....maggots and I don't get along well and it makes it very traumatic!

Suebee....trust me....my hen absolutely loved to be soaked in the tub...she didn't find it stressful at all...she would actually sink into the water....I think she was smiling! I thought it would upset her the first time...I just talked to her...then realized I was the silly one...she was having a good time! And it really cleaned her up as well. As long as she has time to dry in the sunshine. I would towel dry her first...as best as I could...and then she would go lay in the sun. Let me know how it goes if you decide to try it.

I should mention that I used a big metal bowl (camping washing kind) which she fit in quite nicely. I put warm water in it to about her vent area if she is standing up....like I said...she would sink down so that there was more than that of her in the water. I would put the "tub basin" on a small table outside and sit on a chair beside her...in case something did make her panic.

Suebee, glad you made it thru, I have a friend in SC and she said that it looks like Ivan (I think that is the next one) is headed towards them and if it does she will pack up the 4 kids 3 adults and 17 dogs and leave town for him. Stay safe.

You hen should love her bath and you can blow dry them on low if you are having cool weather like us (60's) Hang in there. I also know that other birds will go into a hard molt when sick but am new to chickens.

OK, I will give her a bath tomorrow (mon.) The water will be covered with feathers with this hard moult she's having.

If she stops with the green poo, then I can stop worrying.

I've had hens who had heavy moults and they didn't feel like doing anything. Just don't know what's going on really. Time will tell.

Zoo, I think that hurricane is supposed to go in the gulf and hit near Texas...but then again, nobody knows for sure!

Just logged on to check on Suebee's chickie status. How did the bath go? Is she feeling any better? Thinking of you all...my remaining hens are still happy and healthy!

Hey Lusty,

I think she's going to make it. She's going through the most severe moult I've ever seen. It's been quite cool here so haven't given her a bath yet. Cooked egg seems to give her extra energy. She decided to join the flock today.
So far, so good.

Glad yours are doing well. I know you get paranoid after a mystery death.

oh my, I just read most of these posts! How terrible! I am worried my rhode island red is an internal layer, cause she was kinda pooping these yellow blobs! She's nearly a year old... and she's been acting weird, by weird, I mean she hasn't gone insane for food when i've provided it! I gave her a warm bath, and she liked it, but now I am concerned that she is done for cause of those yellow egg like pieces... is there nothing I can do for her? I always kinda liked her cause I picked her, and she was slow to learn to fly.. she'd kinda just fall.. Lol... any ideas would be appreciated.. .Thanks!

how is your girl doing? i'm gojng through the ssme thing right now i was lucky enough to find a vet that would look at her she's been there since wens am now. but hasn't seen any inprovement in the abdomin yet.
