Please, please help! Bleeding chicken.

I posted yesterday that my 13 week old barred rock had a really large crop that was sticking out. Today it is an open wound, the feathers are all matted around it, and she is bleeding. I just got home from work to see this.

I'm not sure what to do. I have peroxide and first aid cream. I also have some tetracycline hydrochloride antibiotic in powder form.

I'm going to get her & try to clean her up...but I'm not sure what to do next. Or what the heck it is!

Any help would be appreciated.

Separate from the others, try to post a pic. Maybe sour crop? But that doesn't generally bleed. Direct pressure on any bleeding areas and don't keep taking the dressing off to look!

You know it sounds like an animal chewed a hole there? I think that may be like a possum or something? Clean it up and get a look at it. If it's a hole into the crop it's not too late to stitch it up. There's probably some good threads around here about stitching. I know some have done the 'crop surgery.' In the meantime put something on it like neosporine without pain killer in it or something that will help stop infection while you decide what you want to do next. You may want to get some antibiotic going in either case.

It DOES look like something was literally chewing on her! However there are no animals whatsoever in the coop/run aside from the 3 other chicks. They've only been out of the run once for an hour yesterday and I was there.

It started yesterday as a raised red bump. Did the other chicks pick at it? Maybe did she pick at it herself? I will get pictures. I'm having a small scale heart attack at the moment.

Can you get a farm vet to clean the crop and stitch it closed? Then she will need some antibiotics (let the vet check to see what kind of antibiotic, not all bacteria respond to tetracycline and yeast does not respond at all). The humane society and animal shelters have vets - call on them.

Oh wait a minute, this looks like it's on her back? It does look like a surface wound but I can't tell for sure. I like to use Scarlet Oil on something like that. You need to get a little spray top for it. You can use some neosporine without pain reliever. You might want to watch out for chewing vermine. I just had a raccoon on my deck late last night and I've never see one here before. You never know what comes in the wee hours.
