Sorry for your experiences. Regret that they confirm that even when instructed (admittedly poorly), some humans (a frustratingly large percentage) will do as little as possible, even where lives are at stake.

That observation has larger implications, of course, but BYC isn't the place to explore them.
Alright I understand thanks. 👍🏻

I just want to say I worked at the TSC in Goshen Indiana! I don’t care if this gets me banned from this page. This is a SERIOUS issue! Like I mentioned in my original post and above I worked at tsc and experienced this stuff first hand! Yes not all of the chicks deaths are tsc fault directly, but there are way more that could have been prevented if employees took chicks seriously! This tsc used the new brooders on the sales floor and the stock tanks in the back for holding the chicks for 24 hours. Many chicks had pasty butt that no one would take care of besides a few employees that can’t be there 24/7. Most employees would just try to rip the dried poo off even though we did “training” on a computer that clearly stated DO NOT RIP DRIED POO OFF CHICKS BUTT! As I’m sure we all know this can injure their butts! Sorry to anyone I offend or make upset or mad but it’s just exactly what happened when I worked there. Believe it or not tsc obviously should not be selling live animals!
I think moreover they need to make sure in their interview process they hire people who care about animals and not just someone who is a body.

Yes I Only worked there for 6 months so I remember my interview pretty well. Nothing was mentioned about animals or even about chicks in general. It’s just funny to me the lady that told me she forgot about the chicks and thought ripping the poo off their butts was fine, is who they call a chicken expert.

Am aware of at least two current threads on this topic. This is my first comment. Just wanted to report the "facts", as far as my local tractor supply store.

When i went to this store back in february, immediately noticed the new tower brooders. Also immediately noticed almost all chicks of several different breeds huddled in the middle of the brooders under the heat lamps. Not moving, not sleeping, nor eating nor drinking. It was clear to me the chicks were too cold. I asked an employee if the chicks had recently arrived. (Usually when chicks first arrive, they are peeping and cheeping nonstop. These chicks were quiet). The employee told me they arrived the day before. I told the employee the chicks werent warm enough, & left after making my purchase.

Have been to that store several times since. The chicks seemed more active, and i thought the heat issue must have been fixed. But today, saw the tower brooders were gone, & the chicks were once again housed in stock tanks. I dont know the reasons for the switch, since I didnt ask any questions. But this tractor supply store has gone back to the stock tank brooders they always used in years past.

Is it the tower brooders or the way they are being used? Let's not blindly run into a cancel culture faux rage when we don't even have half the clues to what is really going on?

If the brooder itself is bad then point out WHAT, HOW, WHY, and WHAT needs to be done to fix it. Id write corporate about it too. If it is just them not using the thing properly, then the store needs to be trained HOW to do it properly. Also, talk to regional might help too. Talk to the manager and give them a few days to a week, if they don't fix it then you can call the news, call the game warden, people like that and report the abuse. But give them the time to correct it first.

Often times, just like with any big box store really, you got a lot of the 20 somethings working there, who know everything, just ask them, but somehow must have missed the chapter on Chicken Care and Feeding 101.

I went to my TSC and everything looked fine to me really.

If something is wrong, then by all means let them know and try to get it corrected but make sure one is complaining about the proper problem, not just a symptom of it, and give the place reasonable time to fix the problem first before you go starting the riots and rally
s.

Now with that, I am NOT an expert on the little intricacies of chicken brooders etc, and I am sure a lot of other people here are in the same boat, yet still want to help and do the right thing. How about those who have concerns, post a picture or two here of the setup at YOUR TSC and we can see from there.

This also gives us POWERFUL evidence, in case it IS a systemic problem, or a lack of concern, or god forbid, outright intentional, the dollar is more important abuse. See this way, by having pictures from all over the place, when we state our case we can say, it's not just one isolated event, it's all over see!?!?!

Just my two eggs worth

..and were all the chicks freezing with butts pasted shut?
Yes! Like I mentioned in my previous post the store manager forgot to turn on the heating plate. They also had pasty butt so bad and when I and another employee soaked their bottoms trying to get everything off our chick manager told us we could just rip the poop off. Even though we are all required to watch chick day training on a computer. In this training they clearly mention many times to never rip poo off a chicks bottom. They also mentioned how brooders are supposed to be cleaned and fresh food and water needs to be given before the store open and after the store closed. These brooders where cleaned maybe once a week when new chicks came in and I had to tell or store manager many times that there is no food nor water and after watching my store manager just continue to do other things I just started feeding and watering them myself.
