Please tell me I'm overreacting

Aw how sweet. I'm glad she settled down. Please let us know how she does in the morning.

Hope you both get a good nights sleep

Just a bit of encouragement. You are doing just great. It sure is nice to know that people care for a little one like this.

You may start the little one on a bit of plain yogurt now. You can put a bit of molasses in the water and the next day a small amount of apple cider vinegar. You can give all this as much as you like (daily wise).

The molasses will perk the little one up and the ACV will keep her from getting "pasty butt". you can put both in the water.

Remember to keep the water clean, change it if you have to.

There is one more trick I have. In a few days, cook the yolk of an egg as you would normally (do not scramble, cook it until it is hard).

Cut the yolk up and keep it in the frig. Take a bit out every day and feed it to your entire brood.

This really gives them a boost. If you have to mix it with their chick starter, so be it.

Above all. Keep clean, fresh water going. i know it is a pain in the butt.

A chick will be good at about 2 weeks and start to really blossom.

Remember to start to lower the temp 5 degrees every week after the first two weeks in the brooder.

I don't know anything about chicks, so I'm learning from you all. But putting a mirror in the tank so she "sees" another chick help, or would she not fall for it because she can't smell the "chick?"

Maybe put the mirror by that wonderful scarf her mama bought her?

I dont think i'd give her molasses..its for flushing out their systems..i'd be leary of doing that with such a young baby. You want to build her strength up...not flush her out.. ( i think.. no expert here..)

also..what the other person said...give her a boiled egg yolk..or a scrambled egg mashed up and cooked..or warm grits or warm oatmeal with a drop of vitamin mixed in them..

Thanks for all the advice.

She was sound asleep every time I checked on her last night. This morning I took her out of the tank, and that eye is way worse. It was bubbled to the point that she couldn't see out of it. I used a wet paper towel to clean it out, and it looks much better. I plopped her down in the food bowl, as I've never seen her eat since she got separated. And she preceded to have two bowel movements in a matter of five minutes. So perhaps I just missed her eating. Right now she's standing at the front of the tank chirping.

I have a few boiled eggs I made for the chicks a couple of days ago. I tried giving the whole group the first one and they hardly touched it. I'll try giving her half of one as soon as I get off the computer.

I'm going to avoid the molasses, but I will put some sugar in her bowl of water, and some in the syringe if I give her a few drops myself. I've given her a few drops of ACV already, and will continue to do so.

And I'll have to search through the house to see if we have a mirror laying around. That's a great idea!

Thank you again everyone! Y'all have been a godsend!

Well I got her to eat some egg. But she would only eat the egg that was stuck to my finger tips, the little brat. So I've just wrapped up an hour of mushing my fingers into hardboiled eggs in the hopes that enough would stick to them that she'd eat. The things we're willing to do for these little ones. I also managed to get quite a few drops of sugar water into her.

I then put her back in the tank, and she preceded to eat some crumbles. Woot! Now if I can just see her drink from the bowl.

PS - It's amazing how much louder they get when they've eaten!

I just hand fed her again. It's amazing how hungry she was already. Well actually I'm not sure if it's hunger or just a new found love of hard-boiled egg. Getting sugar water in her is getting harder. But I checked her crop and it's not hard, so I'm not terribly worried about it.

She looks soooo much better than this morning. I feel bad, but I've gotta go get some lunch for myself and her little chirps are making me feel guilty about that. Haha! Little runt.

Go easy on the sugar water..it will cause her to have pasty butt..which is a whole nother problem. If shes eating..dont give her any more sugar water. Also...the ACV is mixed in the water..diluted. Not full strength drops. Good luck! your doing a great job!

Also..if shes eating egg...thats good! it wont hurt her at all!(at least shes eating...) you could even wet some chick food with warm water into a mush..and mix alot of the egg in it...
so that way she gets her chick food AND the egg.

Funny my meaties from ideal did the same. My leghorns got it too. It is a resp infection. I used the tylan injectable for one. Go get the tylan for water. It is easier! It can spread so be careful.

I don't know about funny, Silly. More like extremely dissappointing. It had never occured to me that Ideal would send out sick chicks.

Ok I stopped the sugar water. And this morning I had mixed some eggs with her crumbles and saw her eat at least some of it. Should I continue the polyvisol? I gave her one drop last night, and was planning on doing the same tonight. Should I continue the one drop every night until she gets better?

She had me worried this morning, but she's definitely perked up and is absolutely adorable when she's out with me. Which leads to yet another question. It's ok to have her away from the tank (and its heat source), correct? I had just assumed it was because my hands should be about 90 degrees. I don't take her out all day, more like about 30-60 mins at a time (depending on how she acts). If she were to show signs of being chilled I would of course put her back right away.

Thanks yet again everyone.
