not good enough, kill it. causing a problem, kill it. not giving you enough satisfaction, kill it. if it's not human or if it's not as "valuable" and it's something you can eat, kill it. ugh!

lol sorry I that's a very irritating pet peeve!

Poor girl! I hope she gets better! If it IS the rooster's fault, then think of the best way to stop it or get rid of him(either by selling him or eating him).

good luck with whatever you choose!

I would put an antibiotic ointment on it and wrap the neck lightly with gauze. That Rooster would be going in the pot on my end. I try hard to keep order in the coop and any ill tempered birds go in the deep freeze. I thought my hens looked bad, after seeing that, mine actually look good.

Send him to the chopping block.

Eeesh! That made me cringe!

I would hate to be surprised with such a thing too! Poor baby (you and the hen)!

That is the area where roos grab on when treading the hen. Maybe she wouldn't submit and he was too rough?

If you are otherwise fond of him, you could try debeaking; or put him in the pot! I love having a rooster around, but sometimes they're more trouble than they're worth!

I agree on flushing it with betadine (a syringe--no needle of course--works best), 2 or 3 times daily. Never use alcohol or peroxide on a deep laceration. They will hinder the closing of the wound. Keep her isolated and dry. You should also gently clip away any feathers covering the wound. It needs to air out and you don't want them scabbing into it. Stitches are not necessary. It will gradually draw itself closed. Just keep it clean (and away from flies).

A couple weeks, and she'll be good as new.

I have been nursing a 5 week old roo with a similar wound, but it is on is lower neck/breast area. I didn't think he was going to make it. Everytime he drank water, it would run out of the hole. I asked for advice and was told to cull him. I resisted their advice and decided to try and treat him. I used sterile saline solution to flush the wound twice a day, then I applied triple anti-biotic ointment after the flush. I left it open to the air and kept him in a dog crate in the coop with the other 24 chicks, because I want them to remain familiar with him so It won't happen again. Any way it has been 6 days and he is doing great. The wound is all healed around the edges and the center is nice and red, and best off all water does not run out of the wound when he drinks!!!

i quess this got bumped back up cause i used it in another post.....the chickens is actually fine now. but my new problem is that i cannot get her back into the flock, none of the other hens look like this, noone even has feather loss. but when the roo sees her he goes crazy trying to attack, not mate, attack.

If the roo does fine with all the other hens, my suggestion would be to find a good home for the HEN, not the roo. Since she's been out of the flock due to separation for the injury, the reintroduction is NOT likely to go smoothly, especially since it was so tense before the incident. The best solution (IMHO) for all concerned is to find a nice farm or family where she can be a pet or join an existing flock and not have to run for her life.

ETA: I had blamed my roo for a similar incident on one of my young pullets, and later discovered the real culprit was another hen. When I saw the attack, the roo actually tried to run the attacking hen AWAY from the pullet, but they got in a small confined area he was too large to enter. He TRIED to do his job, bless his heart. Since the pullet recovered and was reintroduced, there have been no further incidents. (unless you count the crazy male guinea that loves to run up and grab a beakful of tail feathers from whomever is closest...)
