Just wanted to update y'all -- Moodgie is basically fine now

I weenied out on the antibiotic that the emergency vet had initially prescribed, b/c it did not seem to be agreeing well with Mo, even though the familiar vet we saw on Sat said to finish it out before switching to metronidazole (which has fixed his wagon in the past - it is an antibiotic but the vet says it also has some antiinflammatory effects on the gut).

So he has been on metronidazole and famotidine since Sunday, and gradually started eating again (and being happier and less lick-y), and since yesterday p.m. he has been basically fine.

I have to conclude that he was probably having an allergic reaction, probably to some food he stole although I can't totally rule out other possibilities, and it was affecting both his gut and his skin.

Citygirlinthecountry, I forget what the exact reason is for not using prednisone or other steroid, but there is something that the vet feels it could make worse, I just don't remember, sorry.

Thank you all again for your good thoughts, I do believe it may have contributed to his getting better

I'm so glad he is better! I'm a basketcase when any of mine are ill.

The prednisone was just a suggestion. I know some people/animals don't tolerate it very well. It has some nasty side effects as well. Plus, it tastes hideous, so it is nigh on impossible to get in an animal. It does help with some stuff though. I'm glad you found another option!

Do we have pictures of Moodgie?

Oh yes, you're right -- I actually meant to add pix to my last post but photobucket crashed my computer *again*

and I gave up.

Here is Mo, who is both larger/puffier and less innocent than the pics make him appear <g>:

He is a *wonderful* cat, he gets along perfectly with the other 3 and loves the kids despite their best efforts at loving *him*
