Just as a little example of how much my 9 hens have produced with Golden Oak Layer feed, I currently have 50 eggs in my fridge from 5-6 days. (Some of the eggs I collected on the 25th are probably from the 24th too because the math would not add up with 9 hens and 5 days equaling 50 eggs.)

They have been laying like CRAZY, so they have been getting treats and piles of things for foraging!

Kalmbach have different products - not only ‘whole grain’. I feed mine Kalmbach Feather Fixer in pellet form.
Thank you for the reminder - I knew they had a chick crumble, but so many people buy them specifically because they are oine of the few nationally offering whole grain options that they have dominated that marketting niche. I tend to forget they make other products.

I just bought a bag of Golden Oaks Feed then saw your post. My bag just says quality chicken feed but nothing about the variety or if it’s for layers. I asked for crumbles because my girls are picking out the seeds they like and leaving the rest of the Kalmbach Hen House feed I’ve been giving them. Is your bag labeled for layers?

And this is exactly why the “whole grain” feeds are not a good idea. There’s a lot of hype around them because people associate the phrase “whole grain” with something good/healthy, but this isn’t bread. The wholeness of the grains doesn’t offer any advantage at all (unlike with bread). Milled (ground) feed is the same thing except it’s ground, and often it’s enriched with extra nutrients that don’t come in grain form and would otherwise settle at the bottom of the bag, or be left behind in the feeder when the chickens pick out only their favorite grains, thus getting incomplete nutrition. Ground feed that’s shaped into uniform crumbles/pellets ensures that the chickens eat all the elements.

It does not say layers on it, but the place I get it from has a tag on the bottom that has all the information and that is where it says "Layer Feed".

The feed has worked wonders for my laying hens. Would you like a picture of the label I get on mine? I am getting a new bag tomorrow.

8-12 eggs a day from 17 hens(three, two and one yr olds) I order my Kalmbach layer feed 16% protein from Chewy .Sometimes I'll buy layer feed from Tractor Supply or Rural King too. My chickens free range a couple hrs a day plus they're fed scraps.

We use a Tucker Milling feed - Nature's Crest. Inexpensive and they love it.
