I think what you guys are trying to do will work for blocking some of the rain as long as you still have lots of airflow.

Is the water only coming in the sides of the run walls,
or running in along the ground into both coop and run?

I have no experience with those panels, but I can't think that turning a run into a greenhouse in the summer is a good idea.

If the floor is just dirt with nothing down on it you need to add a good layer of bedding to absorb the water -- wood chips, shavings, straw, pine straw, leaves, etc. A mix of material is best because it won't pack down into anaerobic mats.

Also, see if groundwater is running into the area and use grass swales or French drain to divert it.

Can you extend the roof overhang beyond the wire to improve things that way?

Would dried grass clippings be OK to add in as well - for 5 week old chicks?

Yep, best if they are fully dried.

If they're good and dry.

Green grass clippings mat and turn into anaerobic muck.

You're right! Thank you. I have to say that I've been struggling with various aspects along sometimes I just feel hopeless. It would really be nice to get some ideas from people with some experience. I will post some over the next couple of days. Hopefully I'll get some illustrative ones out tomorrow.

Is this why sand is a bad run material if one has a lot of rain? Do you have any recommendations for when sand runs get wet?

I would like to know too, since I've also heard it's bad for sand to get wet. But I wonder if that only pertains to sand that's too fine, or if it also applies to a mixed grade, like construction-grade sand?

Yes I have play sand in my run- I have noticed it gets smelly but I dont know if that is due to water or not- VERY curious!!
