Plymouth/Barred Rock - he or she?

This is Dotty. We thought Tractor Supply sold us all pullets, but we starting to have our doubts about this one.

Dotty defies everything we've read about the breed. Loud, not docile... and now we're thinking she's a he.

That is definitely a cockerel.

Green is the telltail rooster tail feathers. Pun intended.

Red is the saddle feathers roosters have.

Blue is the oversized comb and waddle.

I'm pretty sure you have a Black Sex-Link rooster, also known as Black Star, Rock Red, or Rhodebar - probably a few other names as well. It's a hybrid made from a Rhode Island Red rooster and a Barred Rock hen. I get a whole lot confused trying to make sense of the genetics and crosses. But it appears that Black Sex-Link roosters can be barred with some red on neck and back, or all black with a red chest. Something I read said it's due to whether the sire rooster had the double gene for barring, or just one gene. I dunno, it's all Greek to me!
