Well, I got some interesting news. It seems the rarity of the Partridge Rock has finally caught the attention of some members of the Plymouth Rock club. From my count we have 3 breeders now tracking down show stock to start their own breeding programs.

All color varieties other than Barred and White a rare in the USA. Buff has some breeders but columbian and silver penciled are as rare as Partridge. It is easier to find them with heritage flocks than show breeders. These pattern birds just are hard to breed and win with in the show ring against whites. The hardest part in buying show line stock is they just do not lay that much at all. Unless you want to show I would not worry about buying show line stock for you would have real bad layers. Most breeders will not sell at all to non members of the club or to a unknown person. ALBC carries many heritage breeders and is a great place to look for better stock. Also some hatcheries are good too that work on preservation.

Update on us here. Winter is over my broody is sitting on eggs and I have more chicks coming in to replace hawk loses. Doing SR of 10 this year to get more roosters as we need them bad. Our one just not making the cut due to a bag leg. Chicks should be here this month.

Very true, and unfortunate. We deal with the Barred variety - but I've set 5 or 6 dozen eggs from a pen which has 1 cock & 1 hen & 4 pullets. So far this year, and in all, I have about 8 chicks as a result of it. We added another set of 5, but, it is nothing to toss an entire dozen from the incubator. The same is true of the Cochins.. well until we plucked them all about 5 weeks ago.

I bought 6 barred rocks and 1 is different...black legs and although it was the same size when I bought them ..it is now quite a bit smaller than the other 5. I don't mind..since I did not buy show stock..but am a little worried the smaller one will get picked (or should I say 'pecked') on. What do you guys think?

I have a dwarf barred rock, and she lives with the Delawares that she was hatched with. There is no pecking on her. She does well with them. They are nearly 4 months old.

I'm all kinds of happy today. I got my chicks in the mail (actually delivered to my door by UPS!) from Dick Horstman (which includes Barred Rocks), and I have my Barred Rock eggs in the incubator from Jamie (Ducktang). I can hardly wait to have my flock of beautiful Barred Rocks.

Wynette has some beautiful Silver Penciled Plymouth Rocks. I hatched 3 (1 male 2 female) and I regret that I sold them, thinking I needed the room for a larger grouping. I may need to beg for more eggs from her. They were so beautiful.

I don't think it'll get picked on. My 19 pullets are at various growing stages and I have a couple of birds with serious problems and they're all getting along great.
